Tips for Looking After Your Tools

The hard part is over, you have chosen your new tools. If you have chosen Cat® Power Tools then, luckily, they are as sturdy as they come. Like any tool though, they still need regular care to keep them working properly, safely, and efficiently. A little maintenance goes a long way, the more you look after your tools, the longer they will last and the better they will perform. Here are some practical tips for looking after your power tools.

1. Store them somewhere dry and clean

Proper storage is one of the simplest ways to extend the life of your tools. Keep your power tools in a clean, dry, and well ventilated space, and avoid areas exposed to damp air, water spray, or heavy dust. Heat and moisture can speed up corrosion and can affect electrical components, so it is best to keep tools off the ground and away from direct weather exposure. If you store tools in a case or toolbox, make sure the tool is clean and dry first, and keep vents and openings clear.

2. Service your tools

Over time, your tool can accumulate wear and tear from normal use. Dust, vibration, and heavy loads can gradually affect performance and may lead to faults if not addressed. From time to time, have your tool serviced so it can be checked and maintained, ensuring everything is operating as it should. Regular servicing can help identify issues early, before they lead to bigger damage or downtime.

3. Fix and replace parts

Regularly check your tools for signs of wear, damage, or loose components. Worn parts do not perform as well and can lead to malfunctions, poor results, or safety issues. If something does not sound right, feels rough, runs hotter than usual, or is not performing as expected, stop and inspect it. Make sure damaged parts are repaired or replaced so the tool can continue to operate correctly and reliably.

4. Replace your blades

Blunt blades and bits put additional pressure on the tool and can reduce accuracy, cutting speed, and overall finish. They can also increase the risk of binding or kickback, depending on the application. Replace blades, bits, and other consumables as soon as you notice a drop in performance. To help reduce how often you need to replace accessories, use high quality accessories suited to the tool and the job. You can buy your new Cat® accessories here.

5. Use the right accessories

Make sure you have the correct accessory for the job at hand, and that it matches the tool type, drive type, and intended use. For example, if you are using an impact driver with screws, always choose impact type screwdriver bits. They are designed to withstand repeated impact and are typically made with hardened tips for longer life. In comparison, standard bits can wear faster and may damage the head of the screw. With a variety of brands and prices on the market, keep in mind that durability and performance often reflect the quality of the accessory. Take a look at the Cat® accessories here.

6. Let them cool

Overheating is a common cause of tool malfunction. If a tool is getting hot during extended use, pause and let it cool down before continuing. This can help protect the motor, battery, and internal components. If you regularly use your tools for long periods and are concerned about overheating, you may want to consider investing in a graphene battery, which will stay cooler longer than the typical lithium battery. Buy one here.

7. Clean tool parts

Dust, debris, and built up grime are no good for power tools, as they can contribute to corrosion and can also affect moving parts and ventilation. After use, wipe down the outside of the tool and keep vents clear so air can circulate properly. To clean the tool, blow out any dust with a can of compressed air and give it a polish with a damp cloth. Avoid forcing dirt further into the tool, and make sure the tool is dry before storing it.

8. Look after your batteries

As mentioned earlier, keep your batteries somewhere cool and dry. Heat and moisture can reduce battery performance and lifespan. Also be sure to protect the pins in the battery terminals of your power tools, keeping them free of dirt and damage so that your batteries and tools can connect together properly and work as a team. Handle batteries carefully, store them securely, and keep terminals clean so you get consistent power delivery.

9. Keep your batteries charged

There is nothing worse than picking up your tool and realising you have a flat battery, so keep your batteries charged and ready to go. This can also be beneficial for battery health, helping you maintain dependable performance when you need it. If you often forget to charge your batteries, consider investing in a Cat® graphene battery for ultra fast 20 minute charging. Buy one here.

It is best to make tool care part of your normal routine, a quick clean, a quick check, and proper storage can make a big difference. With regular care and a bit of attention to wear items, you can be rest assured your tools will last for years to come.

Another happy customer. Thank you to Shane, Brian, and the entire team at Watsons Caravans Port Macquarie for your continued support and for the work you send our way.

DCE Group Enterprises assessed one of Watsons Caravans’ diesel pressure washers. We carried out an overall inspection and evaluation of the unit to confirm its current condition and to identify any issues requiring attention. This included checking the general presentation of the machine, inspecting accessible components for signs of wear, damage, or deterioration, and reviewing how the unit was performing at the time of assessment.

This assessment provided Watsons Caravans with a clear understanding of the pressure washer’s current state and helped confirm what was operating as expected, along with any areas that may need further action. Our goal was to provide practical information that supports planning for maintenance and helps avoid unnecessary downtime.

It was great to meet Brian and have a laugh while loading his pressure washer into his ute. These little moments help build trust, strengthen working relationships, and support local businesses growing together well into the future.
