As part of the fire upgrades required under the Fire Engineering Report for Alexandria, 275,000 effective litres of water supply was required to feed the sprinkler system upgrade to the 25 individual warehouses.

Through the difficult design development stage, it was determined that precast tanks located between a warehouse footing system (designated as a under croft driveway) would provide the best outcome to the end users. As not all 13 x 25,000 litre tanks would fit under the building, two tanks needed to sit under carparking spaces off the common driveway.

With a maximum weight loading of 18t over a triple axel layout, having the tanks situation under the under croft and car spaces provided design confidence that future unknown delivery vehicles for the greater estate would not damage these infrastructure assets.

13 tanks were floated overnight (at three different stages over 9 months) from Qld, as the supplier was found to be the only provider of tanks that were compliant for use as fire tanks. This involved 3 partial street closures, 1 x Ausgrid application to lift over low voltage power lines, installation of 2 x 4.5m x 4.5m engineered shoring systems and many, many logistical manoeuvres within a very limited construction zone which left only 10m x 4m within 5 metres of power lines, to install the shoring and conduct the excavation.”
