Not every design decision happens behind a computer screen.

This afternoon was spent at searching for the perfect statement stone for our client's kitchen island.

The surrounding cabinetry is Polytec Blossom White, paired with a soft light grey marble benchtop and splashback. Beautiful, timeless and understated.

But the island needed to do something different.

With blackened oak feature cabinetry, we wanted the island to become the heart of the kitchen. Something darker. Moodier. A statement piece that would anchor the entire space while complementing the warmth of the timber and creating contrast against the lighter palette.

It's amazing how different a slab can look once it's placed next to the actual cabinetry and finishes. That's why we never make these decisions from a tiny sample alone.

If you're heading out to choose your own stone, here are three things to take with you:

✔️ Your exact cabinetry colour samples.
✔️ Your flooring samples.
✔️ Your floor plan showing the cabinetry layout, dimensions and where each stone will be used.

A few things worth knowing about prestart selections before you see the finished result.

The pros of locking things in early. Your selections are costed properly before the build starts. You avoid variations once construction is underway, which is where budgets quietly blow out. You get to see the home as a whole, not as a list of disconnected choices.

The cons most people do not talk about. It takes time. It takes more decisions than most clients expect. And it forces you to think about things like tapware, grout colour, and door handles before you have even seen a wall go up.

The trade off is worth it.

And this is what it looks like when it is done properly.

Timber grain joinery floor to ceiling. Marble that runs the full length of the bench and climbs the splashback. A living space that opens into the kitchen without losing its own shape. A floating staircase that somehow makes the whole floor feel bigger.

Outside, the render tone sits quiet against the landscaping. Nothing competing. Everything reading as one thing.

This is the Bournemouth build. Every selection locked in well before the slab went down.
