Side by side, these two homes on a leafy Menora street are a great example of just how individual a 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 can be.

Both renovation scopes incorporated substantial second storey additions, but each was designed to respond to the architecture of the original home.

For one, traditional face brickwork was carried through to the upper level, creating an addition that feels established and consistent with the home's character. Next door, a lighter textured finish was used to complement the original home while giving the second storey its own architectural expression.

Different materials. Different design responses. The same objective - to create considerably more space without losing the character that made each home worth keeping in the first place.

Ten years apart, both projects went on to receive Master Builders recognition.

But is a second storey the right solution for every home?

In this edition of Expert Insights, Simon Pullen, Registered Builder and Senior Design Consultant at Addstyle, explains some of the key considerations when assessing whether a second storey addition is the right investment for your property.

🏠𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃: 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐄𝐫𝐚𝐬, 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭

Every transformation has a story.

This one begins with a charming character cottage, follows the journey through construction, and ends with a home that beautifully balances heritage charm with contemporary architectural design.

Designed for a professional couple with young children, this renovation was driven by a clear vision: preserve everything they loved about the original home while creating light-filled spaces that reflected the way their family lives today.

✨ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝:
✅ Created a light-filled rear extension incorporating a new kitchen, dining and living area
✅ Added a generous scullery and reconfigured the laundry for improved functionality
✅ Extended the home to create a luxurious ensuite and walk-in robe
✅ Designed a new alfresco that seamlessly connects with the main living spaces
✅ Undertook extensive internal renovations to improve flow throughout the home

The true beauty of this project lies in the contrast.

At the front, the original character cottage has been lovingly restored and enhanced, celebrating its timeless proportions and period detailing. Beyond it, the home opens into a striking contemporary extension, where soaring raking ceilings, architectural cladding, expansive glazing and beautifully considered living spaces create a bold yet complementary statement.

Rather than competing, the two styles work together effortlessly. The character home provides warmth and history, while the modern extension delivers light, space and functionality. It's the best of both eras, thoughtfully connected into one cohesive family home.

The result is a home that feels timeless rather than trendy, honouring its past while embracing the future.

𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃: 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞 ⚓

Designed for a professional couple with young children, this renovation was driven by a clear vision for how their home should function, feel and evolve with family life.

With a strong appreciation for thoughtful design and a refined interior aesthetic, the owners approached the project with confidence and clarity. Their brief was simple: create a home that worked harder for everyday family living while delivering the warmth, sophistication and attention to detail they value.

✨ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝:
✅ Relocated the kitchen to create a more connected heart of the home
✅ Opened up the floorplan to improve flow between living, dining and outdoor spaces
✅ Added a new alfresco area designed for year-round entertaining
✅ Installed expansive timber stacking doors to strengthen the indoor-outdoor connection
✅ Delivered bespoke kitchen cabinetry with integrated appliances and extensive storage solutions

The kitchen became the centrepiece of the transformation. Featuring custom shaker-profile cabinetry, Dekton surfaces, fluted glass overhead cupboards, integrated appliances and carefully selected brass detailing, it strikes the perfect balance between timeless elegance and practical family living.

Large timber stacking doors flood the interior with natural light and create a seamless transition to the new alfresco, allowing the family to move effortlessly between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The result is a home that feels calm, sophisticated and beautifully resolved — a reflection of the owners' exceptional taste and a space perfectly tailored to the way their family lives today.
