Six years ago, Mel Logozzo’s Perth backyard consisted of paving, palms and a few established fruit trees… Now, it is bursting with biodiversity, full of plants and nesting opportunities for little critters such as native bees and wasps. These critters are the common denominator uniting three very different garden areas on the 714m² property, with Mel purposefully creating habitat to suit their specific needs.
Mel shares her fascinating micro-lens photography of these critters on her successful Instagram account .
Catch her story of rewilding in the September issue of our magazine! And see more of her wonderful wildlife garden on Friday, September 6, at 7.30pm on ABC TV, or on iview.

Over a quarter of Australia's butterflies use native grasses as their host-plants – and at least 9 species use ‘Weeping Grass’.
It's a crying shame that this beautiful, distinctive, native grass is not nearly as widespread as it used to be.
‘Weeping Grass’, also known as ‘Meadow Rice Grass’, needs to regularly re-seed itself – but this requires being left to reach maturity and a height of 70cm so that it can develop a seedhead – which causes the stem to arch or ‘bow’ over.
More about Weeping Grass here: https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/pastures-and-rangelands/rangelands/publications-and-information/grassedup/species/microlaena

An easy way to support pollinators and other beneficial insects in your yard, is to ensure you have a diverse range of plants in flower all year. You don’t even need to add extra plants (although who needs an excuse to go plant shopping? There will always be room for more plants) just leave some or parts of your edibles in to flower.

It’s me, hi 👋
I recent shared an archived story on Instagram featuring a can of beer next to a tromboncino for size comparison and mentioned that I had a lot of archived stories featuring alcohol.
I haven’t had a drink in 2.5 years - it’s been a journey. Mental health, gardening, social media and insect stalking are all part of that journey.
I asked if I should have a random life rant about all of the above and so many voted that I should or slid in to my DMs for a chat.
For those that feel like listening to me ramble, I’ve posted there are 2 half hour rambles on YouTube… turns out I have a lot to talk about and need to upload it in a little multi series 😂
Happy to answer any questions or elaborate on things.
Anyone else love aphid season? 😂

Discount on native plants! 🌱
Want to beautify your garden? The City’s Native Plant Subsidy scheme allows residents to purchase up to 20 native plants from the APACE WA nursery at 50 percent of their usual price.
The scheme runs in May and a variety of species will be available ranging from flowering shrubs to bird-attracting trees.
Aside from their natural beauty, native plants carry all sorts of benefits for your garden. They typically require less water – saving on your reticulation. They also attract local birds and fauna and require less maintenance.
Stocks are limited, so get in quick! Proof of address must be supplied to collect.

My current obsession, Trichocolletes sp. on one of my Hardenbergias. #beelover #invertebrates #obssesed #bees #savethebees
Ahhhhhh! New-bee alert! (Well, new to my garden anyway) It was only a week ago that I posted a video of this genus in ‘Native bees of Western Australia’ on Facebook and commented ‘hopefully one day they find my garden, I’ve gone heavy on the native peas’ - TODAY IS THE DAY!!! It’s no secret that I’m crazy about ground nesting bees. How long do you think it will take me to find them nesting? 😏 Trichocolletes sp. #nativebees #bees #habitat #pea #insects #beelove
It’s official, I’ve spotted native bees in my garden for every month of ‘winter’ 🐝 Lasioglossum (chilalictus) sp. #nativebee #sunsout #winter #bees #habitatgarden
Just over a year ago, I planted out my first native butterfly garden (and in true Mel style, I fell in love with it and have made a few more since) - A lot of my native areas have been planted out with the intention of attracting specific species. So, what did I plant? Great question, I have no idea where I put my list! I’ll just focus on one plant today Parietaria debilis, known as pellitory or native pellitory. It can be found in NSW, VIC, SA and WA and it is the host plant for the Yellow Admiral (Vanessa itea) #butterflygarden #yellowadmiral #hostplant #habitatgarden #australiannativeplants
Ok, I might be a little obsessed with observing my sawfly larvae (Perga sp.) on my verge Illyarie. #sawflylarvae #sawfly #citizenscience

It’s finally happening! The sawfly (Perga sp.) larvae I’ve been stalking on my verge are finally making their way down to the soil to start pupating… ahhh I’m super excited! #sawfly #perga #eucalypts #ozinverts #sprayfree #backyardbiodiversity #insectguru #invertebrates
