Spring at The Newt in Somerset is the kind of place that makes you stop mid-walk just to take it all in. From perfectly clipped topiary and elegant parterre gardens to wildflower meadows buzzing with bees, every corner feels like a living work of art.

Originally part of the historic Hadspen estate, The Newt blends centuries of garden design with modern creativity, creating one of England’s most breathtaking horticultural destinations. Take a wander through the spiralling Parabola walled garden, the schematic Colour Garden, the vibrant and overflowing Cottage Garden, or the productive Kitchen Garden. Further exploration of the estate uncovers the dramatic Four Seasons Garden, ancient apple orchards with over 300 varieties, idyllic woodland walks filled with bluebells, and intricate planting schemes bursting with spring flowers and blossom.

The level of detail here is incredible, layered textures, carefully chosen colour palettes and naturalistic planting make every pathway feel immersive. Even the trees steal the show, from towering cedars and ornamental cherries to heritage fruit trees that celebrate Somerset’s rich cider-making history 🍎

If you love gardens, design, flowers and English countryside charm, The Newt deserves a spot at the very top of your travel list this spring 🇬🇧

Which part would you explore first, the orchards, the woodland gardens or the formal parterres? 👇

From a lunar-like clay pit to one of the most extraordinary gardens on Earth 🌍🌿 The Eden Project in Cornwall is pure magic in late May, when the Outdoor Gardens burst into colour and the iconic biomes are overflowing with life.
Step inside the giant Rainforest Biome and you’ll find soaring banana plants, cocoa trees, coffee, rubber plants, giant bamboo and exotic tropical flowers thriving in warm jungle humidity. 🌴🍌☕ Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Biome feels like a sun-drenched European escape with ancient olive trees, grape vines, citrus groves, proteas, aloes, grass trees, kangaroo paws and fragrant herbs filling the air with incredible scent.
Outside, spring slips into early summer with wildflower meadows, lavender, sunflowers, pollinator-friendly plants. Mid to late May is one of the best times to visit, with lush greenery, fresh blooms and longer golden evenings make the whole site feel alive. 🌸☀️
What makes Eden even more remarkable is its story. The site was once a vast, exhausted china clay quarry before visionary founder Tim Smit and his team transformed it into a global garden dedicated to the relationship between people and plants. Opened in 2001, the futuristic geodesic domes were engineered to sit perfectly within the crater-like landscape and now house thousands of plant species from across the world.
More than just a garden, Eden is a symbol of regeneration, sustainability and imagination, proving that even a scarred industrial landscape can bloom again.
Have you visited the rainforest canopy walkway yet? Or felt the sudden tropical heat hit as the biome doors open? 🌿🔥

Hidden along the Cornish coastline, Caerhays Castle Gardens bursts into life each spring with breathtaking colour. Nestled above the sea, this world-famous woodland garden is home to one of the UK’s finest collections of Magnolias, Camellias and Rhododendrons . Think towering 100-year-old magnolia trees dripping in pink, white and crimson blooms, rare champion trees, and winding paths filled with the scent of spring.

But what makes Caerhays truly extraordinary is the story behind the plants. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Williams family sponsored legendary plant hunters like Ernest “Chinese” Wilson and George Forrest, who risked their lives exploring remote regions of China and the Himalayas searching for new species. Many of the rare magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons they introduced still thrive here today, making Caerhays a living museum of botanical adventure.

Today the gardens hold a National Magnolia Collection with hundreds of varieties, including stunning hybrids bred right here in Cornwall. Thanks to the estate’s unique coastal microclimate, these exotic plants flourish in spectacular style every spring.

If there’s ever a bucket-list spring garden in England… this is it. 🇬🇧💚

Spring in Cornwall feels like stepping into a secret world… and nowhere captures that magic quite like The Lost Gardens of Heligan 🌿
By mid to late May, Heligan is bursting into life with towering tree-like Rhododendrons, ancient Camellias, foxgloves, tree ferns and lush Victorian kitchen gardens overflowing with heritage vegetables, herbs and fruit. Wander beneath giant Gunnera leaves, explore the famous Jungle with its subtropical planting, and discover winding paths lined with magnolias, bamboo and towering exotic trees. 🌸🌳🍃
But Heligan is more than just beautiful gardens, it’s a living piece of history. Created by the Tremayne family in the 18th and 19th centuries, the estate once employed more than 20 gardeners. When World War I broke out, many of those gardeners left for the trenches and never returned. The gardens slowly disappeared beneath ivy and brambles for decades, becoming a forgotten “Sleeping Beauty” hidden in Cornwall. In 1990, an extraordinary restoration began, uncovering lost glasshouses, melon yards, pineapple pits and pathways buried for over 70 years. Today, Heligan stands as both one of Britain’s most magical gardens and a moving memorial to the lives changed by war. 🌺🪖
Late May is one of the best times to visit, with warm spring light, huge flowering rhododendrons, vibrant herbaceous borders and that dreamy English-garden atmosphere that feels straight out of a storybook. Every corner is pure cottage garden inspiration mixed with wild jungle adventure. 📸✨
Save this for your UK garden bucket list 🇬🇧🌿

Spring at Hestercombe Gardens feels like stepping into a living painting. From the moment you wander through the famous Edwardian terraces designed by the legendary partnership of Sir Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll, every pathway, pergola and reflective water channel feels carefully choreographed to celebrate the season.

Set across 50 acres in Somerset, Hestercombe is a masterpiece of four centuries of garden design, from the romantic Georgian landscape garden with its lakes, cascades and woodland walks, to the Victorian shrubbery bursting with texture and colour. In spring, clouds of magnolia, camellia, rhododendron, tulips, foxgloves, primroses and fragrant wisteria create layer upon layer of colour, while ancient yews, copper beeches and specimen cedars frame those iconic English garden views.

What makes Hestercombe truly magical is the intricate planting design. Jekyll’s signature colour harmonies flow through the borders with dreamy combinations of silver foliage, lavender, iris, roses and soft pastel perennials designed to bloom in sequence through the season. Every turn reveals symmetry, balance and hidden vistas, from the Daisy Steps to the peaceful water gardens and the secret woodland valleys beyond.

Originally recorded as early as the 9th century and shaped over generations by the Warre and Portman families, Hestercombe is now considered one of the finest surviving examples of Arts & Crafts garden design in England. It’s not just a garden… it’s a masterclass in history, architecture and horticultural artistry! It has my favourite steps, stonework and pergola in all of the gardens that I have visited around the world!

If spring in England had a postcard-perfect destination, this would be it.

Spring at Sudeley Castle is pure English garden magic. From the moment you wander through the castle grounds, every pathway feels like stepping into a living painting. Famous for its romantic ruins and connection to Queen Katherine Parr, who is buried here, Sudeley blends Tudor history with some of the most breathtaking seasonal planting in the Cotswolds.
In spring, the gardens burst alive with thousands of tulips, fragrant roses, peonies, and vibrant herbaceous borders carefully designed to flow with colour and texture through the season. Ancient yew hedges and topiary create structure and symmetry, while towering cedars, magnolias, colourful maple trees and rare specimen shrubs soften the landscape with layers of fresh spring colour.
The beautifully designed Knot Garden is a highlight, inspired by the pattern of Queen Elizabeth I’s gown, with intricate box hedging and richly planted beds creating an elegant Tudor-style masterpiece. Nearby, the Queens’ Garden celebrates England’s queens with over 80 varieties of roses, filling the air with perfume as bees buzz between the blooms.
Every corner of Sudeley feels thoughtfully curated, from secret pathways and reflective ponds to wildflower meadows framed by the rolling Gloucestershire countryside. It’s the perfect reminder of how English gardens balance precision planting with natural beauty.

Spring at the glorious Kiftsgate Court is pure English garden magic. Perched high on the Cotswold escarpment above Mickleton, this breathtaking garden bursts into life each spring with billowing tulips, fragrant old roses, clouds of bluebells, flowering cherries, magnolias and drifts of wisteria weaving through the terraces and borders. The views across the Vale of Evesham are every bit as spectacular as the planting itself.
Created in the 1920s by the visionary Heather Muir and lovingly shaped by three generations of women gardeners, Kiftsgate is famous for its romantic yet intricate design. Winding paths lead through richly layered herbaceous borders, yew hedges, secluded garden rooms and a dreamy water garden, all planted with an artist’s eye for colour and texture. The legendary Rosa filipes ‘Kiftsgate’, one of Britain’s largest climbing roses is a true showstopper and a symbol of the garden’s timeless charm.
What makes Kiftsgate so special is how beautifully natural it feels despite the extraordinary attention to detail. Every corner has a softness and spontaneity that perfectly captures the romance of an English spring garden. From copper beeches and lime trees to vibrant azaleas, delicate primulas and cascading roses, this is cottage garden planting elevated to an art form.
