Destination: an ensuite AND a powder room. Yes, wallpaper works in bathrooms — you might remember the koi bathroom from last month. The recipe hasn't changed: the right paste, tight seams, sealed edges, and paper that can handle a steamy Tuesday morning.

White cabinetry stays crisp, the sage does the warmth, and those copper pendants suddenly look like they were bought for the paint (they weren't — the paint was chosen for them; that's the trick).

And yes — the smoke alarm and every switch plate came off the wall before the roller came out. You know the rules by now.

Older homes ALWAYS have surprises. Crumbly plaster behind solid-looking paint, mystery patches, that one wall that's never been square. The job isn't to panic about them — it's to fix them and carry on.

How to spot a painter who cuts corners, part two: look behind the alarm sensor. 👀

In Lou's words: "Always move the alarm — it's only 1 screw!"

Alarm sensors, light switches, power points, smoke alarm surrounds — the lazy version paints around them and leaves a ghost outline for the next decade. The proper version: off the wall, painted behind, refitted like nothing happened. One screw. Thirty seconds. No excuse.

Same rule as the door hinges: anyone can get paint on a wall. The difference you're paying for lives in the details nobody photographs.

Every white patch on that wall is a dent, a screw hole, a scuff or a hairline crack that got found, filled and sanded BEFORE any paint came out of the tin. It's not glamorous. It never makes the after photo. But it's the difference between walls that look good on handover day and walls that still look good in five years.

Paint doesn't hide problems — it highlights them. Gloss and low sun are merciless. So we fix the wall first, then paint the wall.

October in Perth: not too hot, not too wet, walls dry in good time — in painter language, this is exterior season. 🏡

Crisp white render, fresh trim, and those jarrah French doors left rich and glowing — this is what an exterior refresh looks like when the details get respect. No shortcuts on prep, because outside walls cop everything: sun, rain, and the neighbour's reticulation.

If your place is looking a bit tired from the street, now's the sweet spot to sort it — before the January sun makes every job twice as sweaty.

Three greens walked in. One got the part. 🎭

This is what a colour decision actually looks like at my end: real swatches, held in the real room, in the real light — morning AND evening, because green has a habit of changing its personality at 5pm.

The winner here was Taubmans Painted Turtle (the middle one), for panelling, ceiling, doors and frames. And a tip from Lou's little book of colour: swatch cards always read LIGHTER than the wall will be. It's darker in real life — plan for it.

This is also why I never let a client commit from a paint chip alone. Sample pots, patches on the wall, a day of living with it. THEN we paint.

Remember when I said colour drenching makes a room feel like a hug? Here's the proof. 🌿

From the archive: a conservatory that went from patchy and tired to drenched head-to-toe in deep green — walls, trim, panelling, the lot. The oak doors got to stay natural, because when everything around them commits to one colour, the timber suddenly looks like it was always meant to be the feature.

Swipe for the before. Same room. Honestly.

Glass rooms are tricky — the light finds every wobble in a drenched space, so the cutting-in has to be perfect. That's the bit you're really paying for.

Same Thursday. Self-employed life isn't 9 to 5 — it's whatever the job needs, plus the admin after dinner.

Not a complaint. When it's your name on the logo, you turn up like it matters. (It does.)

Honesty post: this is what it looks like when the tape lies to you. 😅

In Lou's own words: "Tape doesn't always work when the old prep underneath isn't sound. But we don't know that till things like this happen."

Here's the thing — if old paint comes away on my tape, that layer was always going to fail. Better it happens now, on my watch, than on your freshly painted wall in six months. So it gets scraped back, primed and repainted properly. No shortcuts, nothing hidden under a pretty top coat.

That's the difference between a paint job and a proper paint job.
