A drive out to the Perth Hills for some preventative maintenance on this beautiful mature lime tree. 🌳🍋

The tree was already looking healthy, so this wasn’t about fixing a problem, it was about keeping it that way.

I reduced the height to keep the fruit within reach, thinned sections of the lower canopy to improve light and airflow, then finished with a feed to support healthy spring growth.

Good citrus care isn’t always about reacting to pests, disease or deficiencies.

A little preventative maintenance at the right time can help keep a mature tree healthy, productive and manageable for years to come.

One lemon tree. FOUR different pests. 😳🍋

Citrus whitefly, a heavy aphid infestation, snails AND citrus gall wasp, all on the same tree.

As Perth warms up and citrus pushes fresh spring growth, pest activity ramps up too.
That tender new flush is exactly where you want to be looking.

Check your citrus regularly through spring, catching these problems early makes them much easier to manage. 🌱🍋

Spring has arrived, and that means it’s time to start keeping a closer eye on your citrus trees. 🍋🌱

A few of the main pests I’m watching for right now are citrus gall wasp, aphids, citrus leaf miner and fruit fly.

Gall wasps are getting closer to emergence, fresh spring growth can quickly attract aphids and leaf miner, and as fruit develops, fruit fly becomes another pest worth staying ahead of.

The earlier you spot a problem, the easier it generally is to manage.

This client had a lemonade citrus tree he absolutely loved, but unfortunately the tree was struggling.

Rather than risk losing that variety completely, I collected four healthy scions and jacket-grafted them onto a branch of his established lemon tree.

If the grafts successfully take, he’ll have lemonade citrus growing from the same tree as his lemons, and a backup if the original tree doesn’t make it.

Now comes the waiting game… 👀🌱

I’ll give you an update over the coming month and show you whether they take!

This is exactly what fruit fly loves. A mandarin tree loaded with overripe fruit, with even more sitting on the ground rotting underneath.

Fruit fly management isn’t just about traps and sprays, garden hygiene is one of the most important parts of control.

Pick ripe fruit regularly and remove fallen, damaged and unwanted fruit instead of leaving it around the tree.

WA guidance specifically recommends keeping host fruit off the ground as part of fruit fly management.

One neglected fruit tree can become a breeding ground and make controlling fruit fly harder for everyone nearby.

Gall wasp control doesn’t stop at your fence line. 🍋🐝

This client had a mature lemon and mandarin tree, while the neighbour had a mature lemon and orange tree, and every single tree had citrus gall wasp.

If you treat your trees but heavily infested citrus next door is left untouched, you can continue to have wasp pressure season after season.

The goal is to work together: inspect nearby citrus, remove or treat active galls at the appropriate time, monitor new growth and use preventative measures to create a gall wasp-free bubble around your properties.

Sometimes fixing the problem means having a chat over the fence. 🤝🍊
