This mature lime tree had completely outgrown its space, pushing hard against a brick pillar, getting too tall, and carrying a mild citrus gall wasp and aphid infestation.

I removed the canopy and branches causing pressure against the pillar, reduced the height, thinned the remaining canopy and removed the gall wasp-affected growth.

The aphids? I left them alone. 🐞

There was a strong population of ladybird beetles throughout the tree, so instead of spraying and potentially killing the beneficial insects too, I’m letting nature do some of the pest control.

Sometimes the best treatment is knowing when NOT to treat. 🌳🐞

This large lemon tree had citrus gall wasp throughout the upper canopy, so the infected growth had to go. 🍋✂️

After reducing the canopy and removing the affected branches, I also selectively thinned some of the developing fruit.

It might seem strange removing perfectly healthy lemons, but when a tree is carrying a heavy crop, thinning some fruit while it’s still small can reduce competition and give the remaining fruit more room and resources to develop.

Sometimes less fruit can mean better fruit. 🍋🌳

This lemon tree is a great example of why location matters when planting citrus. 🍋☀️

During winter it receives very limited direct sunlight, and combined with cold conditions, fruit production and a citrus gall wasp infestation, the tree is showing signs of stress including significant leaf drop.

For this visit I:

✂️ Removed gall wasp affected growth
🌿 Lightly thinned crossing and congested branches
📏 Reduced some of the taller growth reaching towards the available sunlight
🍋 Removed some fruit to reduce demand on the tree
🌱 Focused on helping it maintain enough healthy canopy to recover into spring.

Citrus generally perform best with around 6–8 hours of direct sunlight, so when choosing a planting location, think about where the sun will be throughout the entire year, not just summer.

This tree can still be maintained in this position, but it’s going to require more attention than a citrus tree growing in full sun.

This lime tree was already in great shape, healthy and flowering heavily. 🍋‍🟩🌸

The goal here wasn’t a major prune, just getting it ready for the growing season ahead.

✅ Reduced the overall height
✅ Removed branches hanging over the neighbour’s property
✅ Lightly thinned the canopy
✅ Liquid feed
✅ Granular citrus feed
✅ Foliar spray

With plenty of flowers already forming, this tree is looking set for a strong spring push and hopefully another quality crop. 🌱🍋‍🟩

Bit out of my natural habitat for this one…

Walking the streets of Melbourne instead of working in Perth. 😂

But I kept noticing Chinotto citrus trees everywhere, and there’s actually some history behind them.

Chinotto has strong ties to Italian food and drink culture, and Italian migrants brought their love of citrus with them to Melbourne. Over time, trees like these became a familiar sight around older homes and neighbourhoods with strong Italian heritage. 🇮🇹🍊

The small, bitter fruit isn’t normally eaten like an orange, it’s traditionally used for marmalades, preserves, candied peel and bitter Italian drinks.

Sometimes an old fruit tree is more than just a tree… it’s a little piece of Melbourne’s history.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is frequent, shallow watering directly around the trunk.

For established citrus, you generally want slower, deeper watering over the root zone underneath the canopy, allowing the soil to partially dry before watering again.

Avoid:

❌ A quick splash every day.
❌ Concentrating water against the trunk.
❌ Watering purely on a schedule.
❌ Letting the tree completely dry out and then flooding it.
❌ Assuming the surface being wet means the root zone is wet.

Aim for:

✅ Deep, thorough watering.
✅ Water spread underneath the canopy.
✅ Consistent soil moisture.
✅ Mulch to reduce evaporation.
✅ Organic matter to improve Perth's sandy soils.
✅ Checking the soil before turning the irrigation on.

Sudden swings between extremely dry and extremely wet conditions can stress citrus and contribute to fruit drop, splitting, poor fruit quality and internal fruit breakdown.

Feed the soil, support the roots, and the tree will follow. 🍋🌱

This old lemon tree is approximately 55 years old and has one hell of a story.

It was originally planted around 1971 and by 2011 was already roughly 40 years old.

That year it was transplanted from a friend’s property to its current home, and 15 years later, it’s still alive, still growing and still producing fruit at around 55 years old. 🌳🍋

Today I was giving it some much-needed maintenance, including:

✂️ Height reduction.
🌿 Canopy thinning.
🐝 Citrus gall wasp removal.
☀️ Opening the canopy for better light and airflow.
🍋 Helping keep this old tree manageable and productive.

It’s pretty impressive to see a citrus tree survive this long, especially after being transplanted as a mature tree.

Proof that with the right care, citrus trees can be around for generations.

A mature lemon tree in Perth and somehow… not a single citrus gall wasp gall in sight! 👀

This one mainly needed some structural work, so I gave the canopy a reduction and thinned out the congested growth to improve airflow, light pe*******on and make the tree much easier to manage.

I also tested the soil pH and, like I find in plenty of Perth gardens, it was too alkaline.
When the pH gets too high, certain nutrients can become harder for the tree to access even when they're already present in the soil.

The long-term goal is to improve the overall soil composition, but for now I've applied some liquid sulphur to start gradually bringing that pH back down.

🌱 Feed the soil and the tree will follow.

Ever heard of an Ice Cream Bean Tree? 🍦🌳

Inside these huge bean-like pods is a sweet, fluffy white edible flesh that’s often described as having a vanilla ice-cream flavour.

But there’s another side to these trees…

They can produce long, heavy horizontal branches, and if the structure isn’t managed properly, those limbs can become vulnerable to snapping.

Once larger branches fail, the wounds left behind can also create opportunities for wood decay to develop over time.

Definitely one of the more unusual fruit trees you’ll come across! 👀

This lemon tree wasn’t looking healthy, and after a closer inspection, I found three separate problems affecting its growth:

🍋 Magnesium deficiency – causing yellowing between the leaf veins. I’ll correct this with magnesium sulphate and ensure the tree receives a balanced citrus feed.

🪲 Red scale – these sap-sucking pests weaken the tree by feeding on the leaves, branches and fruit. I’ll treat the infestation with horticultural oil and continue monitoring for any survivors.

🐝 Citrus gall wasp – the swollen galls need to be pruned out well below the visible damage before the adult wasps emerge.

Fixing just one problem wouldn’t be enough. Each issue needs to be treated properly, followed by consistent watering, feeding and pest monitoring to help this lemon tree recover.
