We are delighted to see our designs come to life and be so well received in Merredin’s Pioneer Park. We have worked closely with the Shire to ensure the narrative and identity of this iconic park is uniquely ‘Merredin’ right down to the fine detailing.

The careful curation of material and the local flora inspired concrete finishes are great examples of how form and function can be layered with narrative and history.

Pioneer Park is the first of a series of transformational projects PLACE Lab are delivering to enhance the Shire of Merredin’s culture, history and tourism and we look forward to sharing more progress over the coming months.

Thank you to our great team; The Shire of Merredin, Engineering Technology Consultants/ETC, TABEC Civil Engineering Consultants, Terpkos Engineering, CADSULT IDS and The Artisan Co. Landscaping for all your hard work to bring this vision to life.

We are delighted to receive very positive community feedback to our preliminary designs for the Brierly Street improvements in Weston, Canberra. The designs were created in response to initial community consultation in 2021 and further targeted stakeholder engagement with local businesses and community groups in 2022.

The improvements will address community requests for better lighting and pedestrian connectivity with a safer traffic environment. A recognisable place character will be created through additional greenery, improved seating including opportunities for alfresco dining, and unique garden rooms.

Thank you to all our collaborators, client representatives and community members who are coming on the journey with us, ACT Government-Major projects Canberra, Harris Hobbs Landscapes and WSP in Australia.

PLACE Lab at the 2022 Town Team Conference

It was wonderful to be invited to showcase our Wise Terrace precinct prototyping project at the 2022 Town Team Conference in Kariyarra Country, South Headland and get firsthand feedback watching and talking to users of the spaces and trial activations.

The purpose of the Town Team Movement | RAC WA Conference is to explore the benefits of the place leadership approach in activating communities; rediscover the power of working together as a collective to create positive change and show how a 'can do' approach works when we all work together.

It was an honour to be part of this 2-day outdoor conference that saw generous sharing of knowledge and a celebration of the real positive change and empowerment of communities. Seeing our ideas for the Wise Terrace precinct coming to life reinforced PLACE Lab’s commitment to work with communities to create places with purpose and identity. We can’t wait to see what happens next in the South Hedland Town Centre!

We are excited to see our design for Kalamunda Central Mall coming to life.

The bespoke canopy design is an interpretation of the distinctive natural environmental surrounding Kalamunda. A series of branches that support folding “leaves”, moving throughout the day, creating dappled light and shadow play across Central Mall. A unique forest experience for Kalamunda.

We are very fortunate to work with an excellent team on the canopy structure; City of Kalamunda, Engineering Technology Consultants/ETC, Terpkos Engineering and Living Iron.

We are delighted that we were selected as finalists for the Kidsafe WA 2022 Consumer Protection Western Australia Awards for Waabiny Park for the Department of Communities.

The complex and sensitive history of this 12-hectare brownfield site in Bentley was reimagined with community engagement into an innovative and unique public open space creating positive social outcomes for existing and future communities.

Thank you to all the wonderful collaborators, our client representatives and most importantly community members, who came on the journey and contributed to the realisation of this amazing outcome. We look forward to seeing the continued evolution of this community.

02/06/2022

This week is National Reconciliation Week with the 2022 theme being “Be Brave. Make Change.” Aboriginal people have lived on the Australian continent for at least 65,000 years and non-aboriginal people have lived in Australia for just 230 years. As a practice, we are working towards an understanding of that fact, and how it might inform our relationship to the land, its original people, and the work that we do. We acknowledge that we still have a long way to go.

"In the aboriginal worldview, everything starts and ends with country, no beginnings, and no endings, everything is a continuum and endless flow of life and ideas emanating from Country". As landscape architects, we can learn from this or draw from this way of thinking that earth is our mother and..."we belong to country; it does not belong to us". A. Page and Memmott, P. (2021). Design: Building on Country. Thames & Hudson.

The pre procurement of native trees from for our Cecil Ave East project with the is coming along nicely. One of the key objectives for this project is to create a strong green spine that will increase canopy cover and work to mitigate urban heat island effect. PLACE Lab is committed to working closely with landscape industry partners on our client's behalf, this will ensure that we secure the best possible start for this amazing future green street.

PLACE Lab is excited to be working with the and to develop a concept plan for Wise Terrace in South Hedland. The project's aim is to create a pedestrianised street using an Action Orientated Planning Approach to transform Wise Terrace. This involves a prototyping phase which will enable the development of creative, doable ideas with the community and stakeholders. These ideas will be tested during a trial to help achieve buy-in to positive change and ultimately inform more permanent solutions for Wise Terrace.

The PLACE team spent three days visiting the town of Port Hedland to capture and embrace the community’s vision of Wise Terrace revitalised. We look forward to the next phase as these ideas get further developed, and ultimately to inform a more permanent solution for Wise Terrace.

Site photos of Northern Parklands construction work by Landscape Elements . The Temporary Place Activation Plan reimagines a vacant 12-hectare development site in Bentley as a new vibrant public open space. Felicia Brady, DoC, leads the transformation of the brownfield site into a new public open space that will form the beginning of the emerging new Bentley 360 community.

The Linear Playscape transforms the existing Taree Street roadway into a 400m long street playscape with programmatic play and art interventions along its length. The Linear Playscape also provides an important link between the existing neighbourhoods in the north to the schools and community facilities to the south.
