Reminder that Swimwise Pool and Spa Service will be closed this Monday, WA Day, Public Holiday.
The weather is finally changing and many people will be shutting down their pools for Winter. If you haven't already, now is the time to reduce the chlorine output level (Winter Mode, if you have that function), the runtime on your chlorinator and add a "Winteriser" Algaecide.
With the aid of an algaecide, you can half the hours on your chlorinator saving you power and wear and tear on the equipment. One treatment last 3 months.

A Different Kind of Black Spot.
Many pool owners would be aware of Black Spot Algae, particularly on older pool surfaces. But did you know there is another kind of Black Spot that effects older fibreglass pools?
It’s called Osmosis Black Spot, it’s not and algae but a stain caused by water leaching through the pool walls from the soil. Over time the waterproof membrane breaks down and the leaching creates blisters in the surface that eventually “pop”. The stains are the chemicals in the pool’s water reacting with the Cobalt in the fibreglass.
Note: Osmosis Stains can occur in other types of pool surfaces with the water reacting with other metals such as copper or iron (rust), but are generally green or brown respectively, rarely black.
How do I tell if it’s Algae or Osmosis Black Spot?
If you have black algae in your pool the spots:
• are slimy to touch,
• won’t react to chlorine,
• are mostly found in corners,
• will grow over time.
You should be able to move some of these algae with a direct chlorine application and scrubbing with a wire pool brush. There is also “LoChlor Black Spot Algae Killer” treatment available at the Swimwise Store. Black Spot Algae is harmful to humans and needs to be treated.
Identifying Osmosis Black Spot on the fibreglass surface:
• small holes and / or blisters in the lining,
• can occur anywhere in the pool,
• doesn’t grow over time,
• feels hard to touch.
Solutions to Osmosis Black Spot:
1. The only long-term solution is to have the pool resurfaced.
2. Alternatively, drain the pool, acid wash and patch the popped blisters.
3. If the above aren’t an option, treat the stains with “LoChlor Spot Away”, specifically designed for fibreglass pools with osmosis stains. This is a short-term solution and will need to be repeated (how often will depend on the severity of the issue initially).

ph and Alkalinity: What's the difference & why both are important.
The pH level and alkalinity in swimming pool water are two important parameters that must be monitored to maintain proper water quality and balance in a pool.
pH level refers to the measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution, with a range of 0 to 14. A pH level of 7 is considered neutral, a pH level less than 7 is considered acidic, and a pH level greater than 7 is considered basic or alkaline. The ideal pH range for swimming pools is 7.2 to 7.8. Maintaining the pH level in this range helps to prevent skin irritation, eye redness, and other problems associated with pH imbalances.
Alkalinity, on the other hand, refers to the ability of a solution to neutralize acids. It is a measure of the total amount of alkaline substances in the water, such as bicarbonates, carbonates, and hydroxides. Alkalinity helps to maintain the pH level in a pool by providing a buffer against rapid changes in pH. A range of 80 to 120 ppm (parts per million) is considered ideal for swimming pools. Maintaining the alkalinity in this range helps to prevent pH fluctuations and ensures the stability of the water.
In summary, while both pH level and alkalinity are important for maintaining water balance, they are distinct parameters that serve different purposes in a swimming pool.

Winter is approaching and for most pool owners it’s time to consider shutting down the pool for the next 6 months. Here is a Handy Guide.
1. Check the pool chemistry. Or bring a water sample into Swimwise and we’ll check it for free.
2. If the Chlorine is below 3, Super Chlorinate or “Shock” the pool two days before step 7.
3. Ensure the pH level is 7.2 – 7.6.
4. Remove any pool accessories / toys out of the water.
5. Brush the pool sides and steps (and vacuum if required).
6. Backwash & rinse your Sand filter or clean your Cartridge filter.
7. Once the Chlorine level has returned to normal, add a Winteriser Algaecide. (Mix the correct amount for your pool size in a bucket of water and pour it around the pool while the system is running – don’t add directly to skimmer box).
8. Put on the pool cover if you have one.
9. The pool will only require half the chlorine it needed in Summer so adjust your system to reflect this. For example, adjust run time of your salt chlorinator to half the hours you would in summer and reduce the chlorine output. Some Chlorinators have a “Winter Mode” switch – this won’t adjust the run time but will reduce the Chlorine output to 85%.
10. Finally, remember to regularly check your pool cleaner is still operating and empty the skimmer basket.
