Den. speciosum Golden Arches x Gold Moon ‘Mick’s Choice’
It’s taken extra light to get these open nicely. I’m looking forward to crossing this with some other choice speciosums.

3rd replate of Clow. russelliana from Tony Watkinson. The success of this seed sow has particular sentimental value for me. Tony was an enthusiastic encourager of everyone he encountered who wanted to grow orchids. To care for his plants and grow them to a size that the Wanneroo /Joondalup orchid club can easily manage has been the goal from the start. I am hoping that a seedling from this pod will eventually be awarded so we can honour Tony by naming it appropriately.

Looks like it’s a good year for speciosum. This is my #1 orchid - first I bought after I learned there was more than just Phalaenopsis. This one had 2 spikes 2 years ago. It had 11 spikes this year but I will trim it back to 8 max.

Keeping records… started replating at 2pm. It’s 6.5 hr later and I’ve just finished with taping the flasks closed, labeling the flasks and completing flask records.
Most of these are at the same stage developmentally even though the sow dates are 30/12/22, 12/4/23 and 14/12/24!

When replaying a contaminated flask, it’s really difficult to get rid of all the fungus. This flask was clearly contaminated by fungus carried in on the plants. I suspect these little guys are too small to survive, but I’ll give it a go anyway.

Yesterday was media prep day…. I should have enough to deal with incoming seed for 2024, but I will need to prepare more flasks for replates.
Of course Murray suggested trying sweet potato… so I’m watching the Den Kayla snow x speciosum replates to see how sweet potato compares to potato…
Tonight I was enjoying my pumpkin and wondering whether that would work for replates or sowing… 😂

Interesting difference in germination and growth rate between these two media.
Den Foxy x hillii seems to be quick off the mark.

This is a common technique I use with newly mounted orchids and mounts that seem too dry. By putting the bottom of the mount in a glass or cup, I can supply water to the roots through the bark. The new root is growing at the top but the older roots are still happily supplying the plant.

Phalaenopsis Violet Queen. 12 blooms open on these lovely linear racemes. I’ve had this for 2 years and have grown it in the round vase for the last 12 months. This little miniature was bought with 2 flower spikes, so the branched raceme is not surprising. The orchid suffered neglect from June to August but no roots were lost. I do like the narrower neck as it reduces water loss and helps maintain humidity better.
