Brat Shelob ‘Okika’: first flowering on this plant. I’m not sure about whether I like this or not. A number of flowers are deformed - which may be poor culture on my side.

This is a rescue attempt on there Paphiopedilum for a friend. The photo was taken 26/11/2024 but I’m posting this for Christmas so I am reminded to take a new photo. I flood this grow space every day or two and the fan dries it out within 24 hrs.

A Christmas surprise! This keiki was a gift from a friend in November. It had already bloomed but apparently it decided it was still spring-enough in my cabinet to bloom again. I hope the roots are as happy as the plant seems to be.

I acquired some Encyclias recently. This one is lovely.

This poor Phalaenopsis got taken out by bugs. I thought I had lost it, but I left the dead stem and roots in the vase after I had treated it and gotten rid of the bugs. It’s going to take time to recover, but the root system is strong.

Phalaenopsis racemes will sometimes grow keiki’s if you keep them in high humidity. I find that placing them in a vase works reasonably well as it allows the raceme to keep absorbing water, nutrients and rooting hormone. When the I put the vase in a warm spot with morning sun. This heats the water and increases the humidity.

An unexpected flower. Cadetia taylorii syn Dendrobium taylorii.
This miniature enjoys the warmth of my humid growbox. The spring sunshine is proving warmth. It likes the humidity most I think.

It’s taken extra light to get these open nicely. I’m looking forward to crossing this with some other choice speciosums.

3rd replate of Clow. russelliana from Tony Watkinson. The success of this seed sow has particular sentimental value for me. Tony was an enthusiastic encourager of everyone he encountered who wanted to grow orchids. To care for his plants and grow them to a size that the Wanneroo /Joondalup orchid club can easily manage has been the goal from the start. I am hoping that a seedling from this pod will eventually be awarded so we can honour Tony by naming it appropriately.

Looks like it’s a good year for speciosum. This is my #1 orchid - first I bought after I learned there was more than just Phalaenopsis. This one had 2 spikes 2 years ago. It had 11 spikes this year but I will trim it back to 8 max.
