Is Your Redundancy Real, or Just on Paper?

Most data centre teams are quick to point to their redundant supply, redundant controllers, and redundant generation. The single line diagram looks impressive.

But a second unit sitting next to the first does not automatically mean the facility is protected.

What actually matters is whether every link in the chain is covered, from the field device through the controller, the communications network, the I/O, and all the way to the operator's screen.

A backup controller wired through a single communications path is not truly redundant, no matter what the equipment schedule says. And that gap shows up at the worst possible time: mid-disturbance, mid-transfer, mid-startup.

Rather than asking if a system is redundant, ask whether the entire path, end to end, is protected.

Energy Security Is The Product

Customers do not buy server halls. They buy uptime.

That uptime is not generated inside the building. It comes from everything sitting upstream: the supply, the protection, the control systems that keep the facility steady and online around the clock.

Put simply, for a large data centre, the energy system is the product being sold. Everything else, the cooling, the compute, the racks, only has value once continuous, high-quality power is guaranteed.

Too often, that guarantee is treated as something that will simply happen once the equipment is ordered and the contracts are signed.

It will not happen by default. A reliable supply has to be engineered in from the start, not assumed at the end.

One Operating Story

Complex data centre projects often have excellent equipment, capable vendors, and detailed drawings. Yet many still encounter integration challenges.

A simple test can reveal why: can someone explain how the entire energy system operates from beginning to end?

Not just the individual components. The full operating story.

How does the facility respond to a network event? When do generators start? What does the battery do? What does the operator see? How does the site recover?

If the answers only exist within separate packages, the project may still be managing the system in pieces. The most successful projects define the operating story early and align every system around it.

Your Data Centre Approval Hasn't Started Yet

Most data centre teams understand that grid connection approvals can take 12–24 months. What often gets missed is when that timeline actually starts.

The approval process doesn't begin when an application is submitted. It begins when the design package is complete enough for the network operator to assess. That means substation design, SCADA architecture, compliance requirements, and integration planning all need to be sufficiently developed.

Projects lose months because critical design dependencies weren't resolved before submission. The application was lodged, progress was being reported, but the approval process hadn't truly started.
