International Women’s Day 2024

What a bunch!

12/12/2023

It’s been an incredible trip down memory lane reflecting on our journey over the past 95 years.

In the last couple of weeks, our directors took some time away from their day-to-day to share some stories with us and some insight into what makes us who we are.

We have a REAL passion for the projects that we undertake. We love the built form and take immense pride in the work we do.

But most importantly – we enjoy the people we do it with.

The Heritage Wing Project

Perhaps the most stunning new element of the
Heritage Wing is the golden shingle soffit to the
portico.

An architectural standout, the shingles were
imported from Europe and manufactured to a
custom size to suit the existing structure. What
truly makes this feature distinct is the LED strip
lighting and wall-wash lights that have been
strategically installed, majestically illuminating the
portico as evening falls.

“It is now nine months since our prized Heritage Building was handed back, after being fully restored and completely transformed by McCorkell Constructions. The complex demolition and construction of the portico is a standout feature that now provides much-needed egress across our western wing. The on-site team were nothing short of fully committed and professional. We continue to invite current parents, past pupils and potential new families to our school and showcase this magnificent building, proudly to all.”

– Brendan Lynch, Business Manager, Star of the Sea College

We couldn’t be more overjoyed with the end result and the pride it brings to Star of the Sea College.

10/05/2023

As we head towards the end of our monumental three-year stint restoring the heritage sheds at Queen Victoria Market , we are beginning to see the market teaming with life once again.

The restoration of the heritage sheds has not only breathed new life into Queen Victoria Market but has also created a supportive infrastructure for its traders. With the addition of new roofing, the market is now better equipped to protect the vendors and their goods from the elements. Furthermore, the modernised services infrastructure has provided traders with greater ease in conducting their business.

Our team is currently making significant progress on the in-ground services for sheds H and I, the last stage of the project. As we near completion, we are proud of the progress made so far and eager to wrap up our work on this iconic Melbourne site.

PROJECT COMPLETE// Latrobe Special Developmental School

The new Latrobe Special Developmental School stands as a beacon for promoting inclusivity and educational excellence within the community and beyond.

Accommodating students with intellectual and associated disabilities, this brand-new campus offers specialist learning spaces spread across two buildings and a large variety of open landscaped areas which the school utilises for a range of social and educational purposes.

Encouraging physical activities, the Community Building includes a fitness and therapy space, a performing arts space, and a multipurpose gym. Across the Central Plaza, the Learning Building offers small classrooms, STEM facilities, and quiet nooks to help reduce stimulus.

At the heart of a great education is the notion that every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive environment. With the new facilities we have built, students and teachers alike will be able to thrive, unlocking their full potential and contributing to a brighter future for us all.

Nightingale Apartments // Fremantle

Incorporating an urban aesthetic, the development harmoniously blends with its industrial surroundings while prioritising eco-friendly design principles.

Each of the fifteen designer apartments, boasting a 9.5 NatHERS Star Rating, offers ample living space and natural light, while the two commercial tenancy spaces provide convenient amenities for residents.

In addition to its eco-friendly construction, the development serves as a model for urban living by fostering a sense of community among its residents. The communal roof terrace and gardens offer a green oasis in the heart of the city, encouraging social interaction for those living in the complex.

Our team played a pivotal role in ensuring the design resolution and coordination led to a sustainable and functional outcome for the project.

Things are well and truly progressing on-site at our Cowes Cultural and Community Centre project.

If you’ve been down to Phillip Island lately, you’ve probably spotted the main structure from Thompson Avenue. The brickwork facade is coming along nicely with the scaffolding already coming down from portions of the western side. Inside the theatre wing, the structural steel for the tiered seating has now been installed and our team have begun to lay down the cross-laminated timber flooring.

As the project progresses through the fitout phase, the focus will be on advancing the insulation and soundproofing, ensuring optimal performance for the final facility, and continuing on with brickwork. Additionally, preparations will be made for the integration of essential services and systems to support the functioning of the centre.

The Cowes Cultural and Community Centre will soon boast a beautiful combination of function and form, enhancing the overall experience for local residents and visitors alike. This impressive facility will not only cater to the cultural needs of the area, but also provide a welcoming space for community gatherings, workshops, and events.

As we inch closer to the completion of the project, excitement is building among residents and visitors alike, eager to explore and experience this new addition to Phillip Island.

Project Update // Haileybury Keysborough

The ground-level raft slabs are now underway for the new Langford Pavilion. These works will allow us to commence the installation of pre-cast concrete in the coming weeks.

Overlooking the school’s Rendall Oval, Haileybury’s new Pavilion is set to impress with its expansive top floor and covered balcony. This prime location will provide the perfect vantage point for viewing various sports games and hosting events. With construction progressing steadily, the anticipation surrounding this exciting new addition to the campus continues to grow.

With such a prominent position on the campus, the Langford Pavilion will undoubtedly become a central hub for students, staff, and visitors alike. As construction moves forward, it is evident that this new addition will solidify the school’s commitment to providing world-class education for its students.

On Sunday our Melbourne team all came together with our partners, little people and furry friends to celebrate our annual Family Day.

Everyone enjoyed a fun day in the park where they could let their hair down, pet some cute (and not so cute) critters, and enjoy a bánh mì or two. The day was filled with so much laughter, smiles and excitement as the little ones ran around keeping themselves busy with activities.

Coming from humble family-owned roots, holding events like this is incredibly important to us. It strengthens our close-knit culture and reinforces our commitment to embracing family values. Gatherings like Family Day not only help strengthen our team’s bond but also enable us to celebrate and appreciate the diverse community that makes up our team.

Our team works tirelessly throughout the year, and the unwavering support of their families plays a significant role in their success. This annual Family Day event serves as an opportunity for us to express our gratitude and extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone that plays a part.

Also a big thanks to the vendors who made sure we were all fed and entertained, and our wonderful team for organising the event - we can’t wait for next year!

NEW PROJECT AWARDED // North Metropolitan TAFE Light Automotive Training Facility

We are thrilled to announce our appointment as head contractor for the construction of a new Light Automotive Training Facility at North Metro TAFE in Joondalup.

This exciting project involves the construction of a new two-storey building and associated external works that will provide vital learning spaces for both horticultural and automotive students. The new facility will have more than 2800 square metres of floor space and will include a large automotive workshop, a soil analysis horticulture laboratory, several technical and computer laboratories, offices, conference rooms, and bathroom facilities.

Since the relocation of light automotive training from Joondalup to the Midland campus there has been a lack of nearby accessible training options for the northern suburbs and Joondalup.

This project will ensure that young people and people looking to reskill in the region have access to modern facilities that appropriately set them up for a career in the trades.

Watch this space for updates on our progress.

NEW PROJECT AWARDED // Old Kyneton Primary School

Further contributing to our growing cultural portfolio, we’re excited to be appointed by Development Victoria to lead the construction of this regional redevelopment project.

This design and construct project situated in the Macedon Ranges will see the historic school re-purposed into a space for local creatives to support growth in the region’s creative industries.

This first phase of works focuses on the iconic bluestone heritage building, the original school which dates back to the 1800s. Important work will be undertaken to restore the building, creating internal spaces for a new gallery and exhibition area, and a new food and beverage offering.

Our first responsibility will be to complete compliance upgrades to the former school and to ensure the successful preservation of the 1800s building. This key regional project will unlock an asset currently unavailable to the local community and we are thrilled to be involved.

Other works to the precinct will include a new link building being constructed to provide a main entry, as well as a space for future events. External landscaping works and new accessible car parking will also improve the site’s accessibility and amenity so the Old Kyneton Primary School can host a range of outdoor community events, year-round.

Construction works have now officially begun and we were honoured to have Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas joining us to mark the turning of the first sod.

Construction Update // Sandringham College

A few weeks ago, we sent a drone up and got a great bird’s eye view of how our works on site are progressing. Take a look at the video!

The roofing has now been installed on the High Performance Centre with cladding almost ready to go on the walls, and the Community Sports Precinct building isn’t far behind.

Once complete, the school’s students and the wider community will be able to enjoy two indoor and nine outdoor sports courts, an oval for cricket and school sports, change rooms and administrative facilities, and expanded car parking.

Keep an eye out for more updates on our social channels.

Project Completed – Wanneroo Secondary College Performing Arts Centre

We are excited to announce the practical completion of the Wanneroo Secondary College Performing Arts Centre. This project presented the unique and difficult challenge of transforming an existing sports hall into a state-of-the-art performing arts centre, complete with external works and realigned car parks.

The new PAC which will benefit over 1,150 students includes a 400m2 theatre with a 250-seat retractable seating system and operable wall. The facility also includes a general learning area and staffroom, a music and drama studio, green rooms and dressing rooms, a foyer, a bio box, a mezzanine, and plenty of storage. This conversion will provide the school with much-needed spaces for its popular specialist programs in drama, dance, and music, and offer students the chance to perform for larger audiences.

Our scope of work also included a refurbishment of the existing cafeteria and outdoor seating area – creating additional spaces for students to relax and socialise during breaks. The important project for the school and local community will not only enhance the students' experience but will also generate local jobs.

We’re well and truly back into the swing of things at our Queen Victoria Market Food Hall project!

The last few months of 2022 saw us make great progress on the structure, roofing and façade of the new Food Hall. The suspended culvert planter inside the hall has also started to take shape.

Trades will increase on-site in the next couple of months as we continue works on the butterfly roof and Queen Street facade, including installation of feature metal work, skylights and facade glazing.

Once completed, the new Food Hall will be a major drawcard for the market. With more spaces to eat, meet and enjoy the iconic market atmosphere, the new Food Hall will complement the heritage of the Queen Victoria Market and introduce an improved layout with more seating, greenery and added facilities.
