Have you ever heard a loud bang after turning a tap of and wondered what that is?💥

Its called a water hammer, and is caused when a tap, toilet valve or washing machine valve shuts quickly, stopping the flow of water and leaving it with no where to go.

That sudden stop creates a pressure surge, which travels through the plumbing system and can cause the pipes to vibrate or bang.

Occasional noise isn't necessarily a major issue, but persistent or severe water hammer shouldn't be ignored. Repeated pressure surges can put extra stress on pipework, fittings, valves and connections. A plumber can investigate the cause and determine whether the system needs things such as pressure adjustment, pipe securing, valve replacement or a water-hammer arrestor.

Depending on how quickly the tap is dripping, a slow leak may waste hundreds of litres, while a more significant drip can waste thousands of litres of water over a year.

The good news? A dripping tap is often a relatively small plumbing issue, especially when it's dealt with early.
