Design Within Country is a developing project, undertaken by Typology Architecture, which explores a theme close to
our heart - the process of placemaking for projects that occur on Country.
What follows is a series of posts exploring the philosophical foundations for a pre-design methodology we have been
developing through practice, interrogating the philosophical framework, sculpting a service that attempts to identify
a process to transfer from First Nations cultural knowledge into authentic architectural outcomes.
This project is grounded on two central ideas: (1) embeddedness within place and (2) the hidden character of place that
can never fully be understood by those outside. To develop this idea, we draw on two philosophical traditions:
Maurice Merleau-Ponty's theory of embodied experience, and the flesh and the speculative realism of Graham Harman's
Object-Oriented Ontology.
