The Nine Muses were Greek goddesses who ruled over the arts and sciences and offered inspiration in these fields. Jane Macrae formally trained as an architect in Melbourne, Australia. With a background in classical music, a love of literature, an enjoyment of maths and science and a passion for all aspects of design, the name Nine Muses aptly captures her varied interests and inspiration. An architect heads off on a week-long landscape photography workshop and comes home obsessed with the details, forms, silhouettes and strange little moments instead of the postcard views.

Somehow not surprising really.

Grateful to Brendan Waites and for such a brilliant week of steep learning, belly laughs and creative inspiration.

I’ll share some of the iconic Great Ocean Road vistas soon, but honestly… I’m a bit in love with this little collection.

Back to the drawing board tomorrow.

The rear of Portarlington Deco was once disconnected from the garden.

While the sun and ocean views sit to the front, the secluded, shady south-facing garden is just as desirable.
We love the moment when, with as minimal intervention as possible, you finally unlock a plan.

A modest rear extension, lifted roofline and new deck reoriented the kitchen and dining to this quieter garden outlook.

Our Portarlington Deco House renovation gently swallowed the original home — not to erase it but to open it up.

By reshaping the form and strengthening the connection to the outdoors, we unlocked northern sunshine with water views and created vistas of gardens and shady spaces to the south. Spoilt for choice.

Captured beautifully by  these spaces finally feel as they were meant to.

And on a day like today with summer finally arriving a little late to the party, I wouldn’t mind perching on that first floor terrace myself.

If summer never shows up, at least we can fire up this baby
Honestly… this space just gets better with time.
The warmth of the timber, that concrete-tile hearth, a stack of records ready to go and a favourite artwork (and family cat) keeping us company.

It’s one of those corners of the house that feels good to be in all day. Morning light, cosy nights and everything softened by natural materials.
Would happily hibernate here until the weather figures itself out.
