Important information from North Motton Beef

Wow. 😮

Just WOW. 😱

We are just completely blown away by the responses to our beef post.

It got to a point where I was just cackling hysterically because the response was so overwhelming and my brain almost shut down 😂

I was even contacted by a couple of media outlets so you can imagine how that was!

THANKYOU for supporting small businesses!

But I am here to say now that I will be going through everything and putting together our lists for November/December. But I need to clarify a few things first so we are all on the same page.

Our abattoir (The Local Meat Co) are BUSY, yet they are amazing and so accommodating. We are able to have 4 animals processed in November and 5 in December (5 is the limit for each processing). If there’s a cancellation or they can fit it in, we will get another one added to the November run.

The amount of 10kg boxes we receive is unknown until we get our order back and we count everything. These cows have been weighing up big so we are hoping to have quite a few.

NOVEMBER-

- 1 cow has been previously and privately sold to regular customers.

- 1 cow will be made into 1/8ths. There was a fair bit of interest and not everyone will get one unfortunately. It’s first in best dressed from the list of interest. This will be a mixture of cuts and can’t be swapped out or changed, it comes as is. Unsure of the weight per 1/8 until we get it all back, but could vary between 20-25kg per 1/8, at $25/kg. More details once we receive it back.

- 2 cows will be made into 10kg boxes (3 if we can get it). $250 per box.

DECEMBER-

5 cows will be made into 10kg boxes. $250 per box.

Looking at a possible FEBRUARY run in the New Year (including Launceston if we can manage it).

We will try to supply as many of you as we can, but the majority of 10kg boxes will be available in December.

I’ll be going down the Facebook post and checking when everyone commented their interest and compiling a list. I will contact you through the page or my own personal Facebook account (as most times I can’t directly message people from the business page). So PLEASE check all your message folders when prompted!

Pickup is directly from our farm in North Motton.

NOVEMBER PICKUP WEEKEND 🥩
Sat 7th/ Sun 8th
9am-5pm both days

DECEMBER PICKUP WEEKEND 🥩
Sat 12th/ Sun 13th
9am-5pm both days

Cash on pickup preferred

If using internet banking, OSKO payment where possible.

We do not have card facilities available. We are looking into it but prefer cash as it eliminates all the fees etc.

All of our meat comes back to us cryovacced, labelled and boxed for easy transport. Sausages are the only cut that do not come cryovacced as they are extremely fresh and too soft.

At this time I won’t be taking any more names for our lists. I do apologise to everyone who hasn’t been able to get a spot. The demand was unprecedented. I’ve been slowly making my way through the numerous emails, messages, phone calls etc. I had to turn off comments on the original post. Please don’t comment on this post that you’d like a box, as unfortunately I won’t be noting it down.

Unless you were able to comment directly on the post, I have not seen your interest, including comments on posts shared etc. The only post I did see was on the NW Chit Chat page and I have not taken any names from that comment section.

Unless you’ve heard from me (Emily) directly, you’re not on my lists.

If we have anything at all left over from no shows or cancellations during these runs, we just work our way down to the next in line and offer it to that customer. If we get through everyone, I will open up a new list for those that missed out completely.

We understand that things change and we do our best to try and get everyone what they need. If you need to cancel an order, or can’t pickup, that’s fine! Just let us know. We will not be holding any orders past the weekends marked for pickup, so please don’t ask. Pickup only available on the days/times specified.

Anyway it’s a long read, and if you’re still with us, Thankyou! It’s just easier to have all the info in one spot.

Can’t wait to supply you all with some incredible TASSIE GROWN AND OWNED beef! 🐄

There’s actually a few suppliers who do beef on the NW Coast, so let’s support them all! There’s plenty to go around.

Much love- Emily and Dave- NMB

UNDERSTANDING FI****MS IN TASMANIA

PART 1: GETTING A FI****MS LICENCE

There is a lot of discussion around fi****ms in Tasmania at the moment, and over the coming week we want to do something a little different.

Rather than add to the noise, we’re going to explain how fi****ms, licensing, ownership, storage and use actually work in Tasmania.

A lot of people have never had anything to do with fi****ms, so it’s completely understandable that they may not know what the process involves. Hopefully this series can help bridge some of that gap.

So, let’s start right at the beginning.

Before someone can even look at acquiring their own firearm, they first need to obtain the appropriate fi****ms licence.

And you can’t simply apply for one because you feel like having a gun.

You need a genuine reason to possess or use a firearm, and you need to provide evidence of it.

That might be sport or target shooting through an approved club, recreational hunting or vermin control, primary production, animal welfare, certain employment purposes, collecting, or another genuine reason recognised under Tasmanian law.

Personal protection, protection of your family, or protection of property are not accepted as genuine reasons in Tasmania.

Once an application is lodged, it goes to Tasmania Police Fi****ms Services for assessment.

Applicants must meet eligibility requirements, provide identification and supporting evidence, and satisfy Tasmania Police that they are a fit and proper person to possess and use fi****ms.

There is also a legislated minimum 28-day processing period for a new application.

Importantly, you don’t just book yourself into a fi****ms course either.

Fi****ms Services must first assess your application and give you written approval to enrol in the approved Fi****ms Safety Training Course for the category you have applied for.

The course itself is much more than simply learning how to use a firearm.

TasTAFE’s approved course includes classroom theory covering fi****ms legislation, different firearm and ammunition types, safety rules, legal and social responsibilities and the consequences of misuse.

That is followed by practical training and assessment at a Tasmania Police-approved shooting range, including safe carrying, loading and unloading, storage, transport and safe firearm handling.

Your competency is assessed, and successful completion is reported back to Fi****ms Services before the licensing process can proceed.

Only after all of those requirements have been satisfied does the process move to final verification, your photograph and the issuing of your fi****ms licence.

And this is an important point:

Receiving a fi****ms licence does not mean you automatically own a firearm, nor does it mean you can simply walk into a shop and purchase whatever firearm you like.

A licence is the first step.

Actually acquiring a firearm is a separate process involving further requirements, another application and assessment by Fi****ms Services.

We’ll cover exactly how that works in Part 2.

For anyone who has never been around fi****ms but has been curious about the sport, hunting or shooting generally, there is also nothing wrong with learning more.

Holding a fi****ms licence does not mean you have to own a firearm. For many people, becoming involved with a local club and going through the licensing and safety process is their first proper introduction to fi****ms, and a very good education in the responsibilities that come with them.

Fi****ms in Tasmania are not an unregulated free-for-all. There is a structured, documented process overseen by Tasmania Police, with formal training and competency assessment along the way.

You certainly don’t have to become a firearm owner to understand that system.

And that’s really the purpose of this series.

If you know someone who may find this useful, please share it with them. Whether you own fi****ms, support them, are concerned about them, or simply know very little about them, we’d much rather see Tasmanians having this conversation with a better understanding of how things actually work.
