Hi there, we would like to let our clients and everyone in the community know that there are scammers out there at the moment posing as legitimate locksmith businesses all over Australia, This has been happening for a while in Europe and the UK but now they are here in Australia. The NSW police force has a department, SLED (Security Licensing Enforcement Directorate), devoted to trying to stop these organised crime syndicates but the syndicates are well funded and very hard to prosecute and stop. The problem really starts with Google allowing non licensed and unqualified individuals to advertise on google Adwords. They use legitimate business names like Manly Locksmiths Pty Ltd in their sponsored Ads and people unsuspectingly click on their Ad and end up with a scammer attending their business or property.
If the price for an emergency lockout sounds cheap, you are likely dealing with a scammer. Lockouts and emergency locksmiths will generally charge between $150 - $300 for an emergency callout depending on the day and the time of day. Not $29 or $45 like these scammers are advertising. They will charge you $29 or $45 to get to your door and then add extra charges. We have heard of people being forced to pay upwards of $1000 to have a scammer damage their locks and doors beyond repair, then it costs them even more for the repairs that need to be done to give them a functioning door and lock. Always ask when quoted for the full price of getting back into your property when locked out, it is also rare that a locksmith will need to be destructive to gain entry, 95% of lockouts can be done without any damage to your locks.
The best way to protect yourself from this is to not click on the sponsored Ads and to use the links from the natural listings, make sure the URL matches the business name advertised, we found that the most relevant information is the listings that utilise google maps. Also when a locksmith arrives make sure they have a valid security licence, it will look like this and will be a Class 2BC, some may have a 2ABCD. They should also be attending in a professionally sign written vehicle.
