We're honoured to see Willowdale Sports Precinct featured by

Located in Sydney's southwest, the pavilion draws inspiration from the area's rich Indigenous history, with references to the ancient clay oven beads once used by the Dharawal and Darug peoples woven throughout the architecture.

Combined with passive design strategies, durable low-maintenance materials and climate-responsive planning, the project demonstrates how community infrastructure can be deeply connected to both Country and place.

Thank you to Archello for sharing the story.

Sam Crawford Architects is a diverse and talented team, and we are always looking for ways to learn from one another. We are excited to congratulate one of our graduates, Isabelle Howe, on being nominated for the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Graduate Medal.

Isabella's capstone Masters of Architecture project, Permanent Impermanence, developed in collaboration with Sophia Cerezo, proposes a new typology for recreational dwelling on Yuin Country in regional NSW.

The proposal takes notes from traditional Indigenous camps, which operated seasonally and often left structural framing standing for future use. Isabella's thoughtful design thinking - considering place, history, and detail - is why she's a great fit for Sam Crawford Architects, and so valued.

We look forward to Isabella excercising this deep despect for Country, restorative appraoch to land and value for Indigenous cultural knowledge at Sam Crawford Architects.

Engaging an architect can unlock the potential of the nooks, crannies and overlooked spaces throughout your home, transforming them into creative, efficient and beautifully resolved places tailored to the way you live.

"Well-designed workspaces are all about style and comfort. They support wellbeing and productivity and effortlessly integrate with the home environment." - Carrol Baker

We're delighted to see both Clovelly House and Waverley House featured in Grand Designs Australia Issue 14.6, in an article exploring thoughtfully designed study spaces in the home.

Can a heritage home honour its past while performing for the future?

Garrett House explores heritage as something living - shaped by the past, responsive to the present and ready for what comes next. Working closely with our clients, we retained and reinterpreted elements of the original Haberfield home, weaving recycled timbers, family stories and traces of its history into a contemporary addition designed around sustainability.

A central courtyard draws daylight, winter sun and natural ventilation deep into the new living spaces, while thermal mass, double glazing, solar hot water, photovoltaic panels, an 18,000L rainwater tank and passive design principles help the house perform comfortably through Sydney’s extremes.

As our client Stephen reflected on a 41°C day: “We feel lucky to live in such a clever house – thank you!”

SCA Insights: What Does a Residential Architect Do, and When Do I Engage One?

We’ve written an in-depth guide exploring the role of an architect and when to bring one into your project. From the value of engaging an architect early, through design and approvals, to our role on site during construction, we unpack how an architect can guide your project from the first ideas through to completion.

Here’s a bite sized overview. For the full article, head to the News & Insights section of our website.

We often encourage clients to live through a summer before installing air conditioning. In many cases, they find they don't need it.

Too often, homes are designed to rely on mechanical heating and cooling rather than responding to Sydney's climate. Good passive design can keep a home comfortable for much of the year, reducing both energy use and running costs.

Willoughby House was designed to capture cooling breezes, natural light and winter sun. On a hot summer's day, the doors can remain wide open, allowing the breeze, birdsong and garden to become part of everyday life rather than shutting the house away behind closed windows and air conditioning.

Many of our clients discover that a ceiling fan or an extra layer in winter is all they need. Thoughtful, climate-responsive design creates homes that are more comfortable, more sustainable and cheaper to run.

Great interior design isn't just about selecting finishes - it's about shaping the way you experience a space.

For this Balmain house, we reconfigured the main bedroom suite to create a more generous, functional retreat. A bespoke bedhead was carefully integrated into the layout so the bed could face the view, while a new ensuite and refined planning transformed the suite into a calm and highly considered space.

At the heart of the design is a simple idea: to stand in the centre of the home and look in every direction to greenery. As journalist Carrol Baker writes, "It's a dwelling that indeed seems to hug the vegetation that surrounds it."

"With limited space for its occupants, this ageing family home was in dire need of an overhaul. What they got was something quite spectacular." - Carrol Baker, Journalist

Our clients, an artist and musician, had spent decades collecting art, books, records and curious objects. The challenge wasn't finding somewhere to store them; it was designing a home where they could be enjoyed every day.

Custom joinery conceals practical storage, while a bespoke cabinet of curiosities turns cherished possessions into part of the architecture.

Our design process is built on constant collaboration and open communication, ensuring your home is deeply personal and every inch is uniquely yours.
