What’s fair and just for the working class is rarely convenient for bosses and the political class.

This week the International Court of Justice affirmed that the right to strike is protected under international law. Big corporations and employer organisations attempted to overturn this right internationally, arguing it had no basis in law. Unions fought back, and won.

The ruling gives a huge boost to workers all over the world. The right to strike is strongly linked to better wages and safer workplaces the world over. It has also helped to reduce economic inequality and strengthen and promote democracy.

Without the right to withdraw labour collectively, employers hold all the power at the bargaining table. Bargaining therefore becomes little more than asking the boss nicely.

But under Australia’s current “protected action” system, workers face a labyrinth of red tape and legal hurdles before they can lawfully stop work. Secret ballots, notice periods and ministerial intervention all make it harder for workers to take collective action, while employers retain enormous economic power through restructures, outsourcing and lockouts.

A true right to strike is a worker's most powerful weapon, and the AMWU will campaign for the removal of all legislation that restricts our ability to defend ourselves from the greed and violence of private capital.

“We will remember them”

Today we remember those who served and those who never returned home.

We’re calling on the NSW Government to establish a Jobs First Commission that will:
1. Invest in local manufacturing and expand NSW domestic capacity
2. Build stronger, more resilient supply chains to protect our state in times of uncertainty
3. Prioritise safe, secure and well-paid jobs for NSW workers

Advocacy from the AMWU put this important legislation on the table, and now it’s time to tell the government that we won’t settle for anything less than a strong Jobs First Commission that delivers real outcomes.

Pretending to the workers, but voting with the bosses.

NEVER voted for better industrial rights❌
NEVER voted for Same Job, Same Pay❌
NEVER voted for more secure, affordable housing❌
NEVER voted for apprentices to have free TAFE❌
NEVER voted for energy workers❌

NEVER has our backs.
Should NEVER get our support.

P.S. If you're heading to the bowser this arvo, remember who's cheering on Trump's war that is making it hurt. ⛽️

On April 28 each year, we pause to remember and mourn workers who have lost their lives to workplace incidents or occupational illnesses.

Join unionists at International Workers Memorial Day services across NSW where we will hear from guest speakers and renew our commitment to keeping workers safe on the job.

Registration is essential for the IWMD Sydney service. Reach out to your AMWU Organiser if you are interested in attending.
