We are very excited to announce that Murrook Culture Centre is a Good Design Award Winner in the Built Environment Architectural Design, 2026 Australian Good Design Awards

Thankyou to our clients Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council for supporting thoughtful community led architecture

Jury citation
“The Jury recognises Murrook Cultural Centre as an exemplar of embedded First Nations co-design and innovative adaptive reuse that embodies the spirit of Country and Culture. This significant cultural project demonstrates how architecture can operate as a framework for Indigenous self-determination, knowledge sharing and care for Country. The Jury commends the long-term community-led process, adaptive reuse strategy and integration of cultural narrative into every spatial and material decision, establishing a powerful model for socially, environmentally and culturally grounded civic architecture with impactful outcomes.”

This year’s awards are presented under the theme Design that Leads - At a time of unprecedented social, environmental and technological change, this year’s theme recognises that good design is more than an outcome, it is a powerful way of thinking, imagining and acting. It challenges us to question what is, envision what could be and design better products, services, places and systems for people and planet.

On the eve of the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Councils 40th Anniversary we were honoured to receive two Awards for Public Architecture and Steel Architecture at the 2025 AIA Newcastle Architecture Awards

Jury Citation: Murrook, a place to share and practice Worimi culture, is a testament to the deep collaboration between architect and client, the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council. Staged works have rehabilitated a former amusement park, with extensive adaptive reuse of existing structures demonstrating the project’s sustainability approach while optimising its modest budget. The masterplan skillfully weaves together a series of existing buildings through new connections and insertions that link Murrook’s diverse functions and social enterprises.

Stories of Country and community are subtly embedded throughout the project, such as in the careful subtraction of existing fabric around culturally sensitive Bilburribith (Melaleuca) trees, allowing them room to breathe. A simple fly-roof and continuous awning create a cohesive new frontage, lined with patterned panels that graphically translate Worimi language. The material palette, reflecting the local area, features rough-cut timber and rammed earth oxides from Country, grounding the architecture in its cultural and environmental context.
