HERITAGE + CONTINUITY

Our approach to heritage begins by understanding and respecting the stories that came before, revealing that narrative and responding to this through a contemporary lens. Creating new chapters on Country while acknowledging and respecting the past, creating a cultural continuum.

In designing the Hedberg, conceived in collaboration with WOHA Architects, preservation wasn't about recreating or mimicking the past.

Our approach to site storytelling through methods of conservation, reuse, interpretation, and revelation.

Not ignoring what was once there, but letting it speak alongside what's new.

The Hedberg won the Roy Sharrington Smith Award for Heritage at the 2022 Tasmanian Architecture Awards as well as many National and International accolades.

Image 1: Through our interlocking design of the concrete panels, we were able to insert lower-value recycled materials from the archaeological dig into the external facade providing activating the facade at human scale level - reinterpreting materiality.

Image 2: What was once the external wall of the heritage-listed Theatre Royal, previously cluttered with a utilitarian metal sheeted stairwell and mechanical units that hung off the wall facing a carpark, is now restored. Breathing space and opportunities for the stories of the past to infiltrate the new foyers have been created. The heritage wall is celebrated by enabling its expression to be uninterrupted across the three levels of foyers.

Every now and then a project reminds us that architecture is less about creating buildings and more about creating the conditions for people to thrive.

Buildings don’t change schools. People do. But good buildings can certainly help.

It’s rewarding to see the Cosgrove High School Revitalisation featured in last weekend's Sunday Tasmanian, written by Sue Bailey. The project is the product of many minds and many hands, and would not be possible without the tireless collaborative contributions of the Department for Education, Children and Young People, the Cosgrove High School leadership team, students, staff and the wider school community, our consultant team, contractors, makers, suppliers, and everyone who shared the ambition, patience and persistence to bring it to life.

Even more rewarding is seeing students make the spaces their own.

NAIDOC Week 2026: Fifty Years of Truth Telling and Design Evolution.

This year’s theme marks a moment to reflect on truth telling, cultural strength, leadership, creativity, and the generations who have carried NAIDOC forward for the last 50 years.

For LIMINAL, it is also a moment to reflect on our own journey since 2011, and how our transdisciplinary approach to architecture, design, the broader environment and storytelling has deepened through continual engagement with and learning from First Nations peoples.

We are inspired by interconnected knowledge systems evolved over more than 65,000 years, where nothing stands in isolation and the creative charge fuelled by the cohesion of multiple disciplines underpins innovation.

We are storytelling people. Our First Nations peoples are our mentors.

Another project complete and ready to pass to the community...

We are pleased to share the completion of the Cosgrove High School Revitalisation, a project close to our hearts, and one we are thrilled to see come to life for the students, educators, staff and leadership team who helped shaped this ambitious project.

Investment in thoughtful architecture and design is never just investment in buildings providing walls and a roof. It is investment in education outcomes, community wellbeing, civic pride and the long term social value that comes from places people genuinely want to inhabit and care for.

Emerging from a deeply collaborative masterplanning journey with the Cosgrove school community, the project reimagines the campus as a culturally safe, inclusive and supportive environment that fosters connection, curiosity and belonging.

The design explores bridging as both concept and lived experience - bridging indoor and outdoor learning, traditional and contemporary education models, and a steep and challenging site through a unifying architectural gesture that enables universal accessibility and movement across campus.

We are grateful to the Department for Education, Children and Young People for having the vision to pursue this project, the team at Cosgrove High School for developing the aspirations that have shaped the result, Vos Construction + Joinery for their collaboration and shared belief in the outcomes we were striving for, and the consultant team who made delivery possible.

We are looking forward to seeing the next generation of stories, ideas and futures unfold within these spaces.

A meaningful project shaped by many voices and generous collaboration.

EVENT: Parlour Hobart Autumn Salon

We are delighted to have Peta Heffernan, co-director of LIMINAL Studio in conversation with architect and urban designer Raquel Rodorigo for the first time as part of the Parlour Conversation Series, convened by Nicky Adams.

Peta and Raquel bring fascinating experiences on large public projects and share commitments to developing quality, inventive, and inclusive environments for community - fostering cultural expression and community interaction.

This is a special Salon: the last at the Brickworks Design Studio, who have been fantastic hosts since 2017. Come along for excellent conversation and to farewell the Design Studio.

Light is more than seeing.

It shapes how we feel in a space, influences our health and wellbeing, and transforms spaces from static form into living experiences. In a performance venue like the Hedberg, light becomes another collaborator - setting mood, guiding movement, weaving intricate worlds.

Southern Lighting supplied the majority of fittings that bring the Hedberg to life, understanding that each fixture plays an important role in the spatial narrative.

From ideation through to completion, projects like this are shaped by countless hands - suppliers, fabricators, installers, and makers who bring vision into being.

We're grateful to work with collaborators who understand that light is never just functional. It's emotional, physiological, theatrical.
