🚊 Maali Group – Armadale Line Upgrade Alliance

Maali Group is proud to have been part of the delivery of the Armadale Line Upgrade — one of Perth’s most significant public transport infrastructure projects, transforming the rail corridor and improving safety, reliability and connectivity for the community.

This project showcases Maali Group doing what we do best: delivering complex electrical and civil works in live rail & infrastructure environments, while creating real opportunities for local and Indigenous people. From night works through to final commissioning, our teams were on the ground every step of the way, keeping the project moving safely and efficiently.

Our scope of works included:

- Full decommissioning and removal of existing rail corridor lighting and electrical infrastructure
- Design-aligned installation of new lighting foundations using augered pier systems
- Supply and installation of pits, conduits and underground electrical reticulation
- Trenching and backfilling across active rail and station environments
- Supply, installation and er****on of new high-mast and corridor light poles
- Cable hauling, jointing and termination of lighting and power circuits
- Installation and integration of Public Transport Authority smart parking systems
- Electrical infrastructure for EV charging stations and associated controls
- Testing, commissioning and energisation of the new lighting, parking and EV systems

At peak delivery, Maali Group had 65 people on site, including operators, electricians, grout crews and supervisors, with 16 Indigenous employees — representing 25% Indigenous participation across the project.

Beyond delivering critical infrastructure, this project created meaningful employment and skills development opportunities that align directly with Maali Group’s three pillars of Employment & Development, Business Engagement and Community Support.

We are proud to have contributed to a project that will deliver long-term benefits for Perth and Western Australia, and we thank our team for the professionalism, pride and commitment they brought to the job every day. We look forward to continuing to support major projects that leave a lasting legacy for our people and our state.

It’s been a year since the completion of the Wiluna Goldfields Highway Upgrade, and while the improved road network has been a fantastic outcome, what we’re most proud of is the opportunity it created for our people.

With the support of the Department of Transport and Main Roads WA, several of our team members were able to gain their conditional HR licences during the project. This not only helped deliver the works safely and efficiently, but also provided lasting qualifications that have allowed them to step straight into new roles after the project wrapped up.

For us, this is what true project success looks like — safer, stronger infrastructure for the community, and pathways for our people to grow and thrive long after the job is done.

👏 A big thank you to the Wiluna crew, our partners, and everyone who supported this journey. You’ve helped build more than a highway — you’ve helped build futures.

🚧 Bunbury Outer Ring Road → Wilman Wadandi Highway

From day one to project completion - we’re proud to have played a part in the transformation of the Bunbury Outer Ring Road, now officially opened as the Wilman Wadandi Highway.

Our team has been on the ground since the beginning, supporting the Transverse & Longitudinal Drainage, Minor Earthworks and the ITS Pit & Pipe Packages - ensuring this major piece of infrastructure is built to last and meets the needs of the South West community.

It’s a privilege to contribute to a project of this scale, one that not only enhances connectivity and safety, but also honours the rich cultural heritage of the Wilman and Wadandi people through its name.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this project to life. We’re proud to have walked this journey alongside you.

As we close out NAIDOC Week 2025 — and mark 50 years since the first NAIDOC Week was held — we pause to reflect on what this year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” means to us at Maali Group.

Mitch Matera, the Managing Director at Maali Group, shared what NAIDOC week and this years theme meant to him.

For me, this is deeply personal. In the decade I’ve been lucky to be apart of businesses like Gnalla Enviro, Maali Group & MGM Alliance, I’ve seen firsthand how NAIDOC Week has grown into something that doesn’t just belong to our people — but is genuinely embraced by workplaces, communities, and industries right across the country.

It hasn’t always been this way. I think about the adversity my father, Mick Matera - my business partner and a fellow Director - faced during his career and many like him that came before me. The resilience and leadership through tough times paved the way for the people like me - the next generation - to keep standing up when we get knocked down. That’s what “Strength, Vision & Legacy” means to me: it’s about learning from our Elders’, picking ourselves up when things get hard, and staying the course to spark real, lasting change.

This year’s theme reminds us that reconciliation, truth-telling, and closing the gap aren’t things we box up for just one week a year - they should be part of who we are, every day. At Maali, our catch phrase is “Sparking Positive Change” - and that’s not just words on a page. It’s about showing our young people what’s possible. It’s about making space for our mob to step up as leaders, tradespeople, operators, and future business owners.

What makes me proudest is seeing our sites and crews living this through Indigenous employment on our projects, made up mostly of young Aboriginal people starting out or looking to progress their career even further. This is what legacy looks like: doors being opened, stories being shared, and barriers being broken down, so the next generation has more opportunities than the last.

As NAIDOC Week 2025 comes to a close, we’re reminded that the work continues long after the flags come down and the week ends. We stand on the strength of our Elders, the vision they showed us, and the legacy we carry forward — together.

Here’s to the next 50 years of NAIDOC, and to all the young ones showing what’s possible when we never give up.

This year, we also wanted to do something special to mark the 50-year milestone. Our Maali crew received custom NAIDOC 2025 shirts — proudly created with Totem Clothing Australia , featuring every NAIDOC Week theme from the past five decades — and a pair of Safestyle art series safety glasses, helping us celebrate culture on every jobsite. A huge thank you to these mob for helping us with this you have been so great to work with and for supporting our teams celebrating NAIDOC week with pride — not just this week, but every day.

As we reflect on National Sorry Day and step into National Reconciliation Week 2025, we are reminded of the importance of acknowledging our past and working together towards a fairer and more united future.

National Sorry Day, observed on 26 May, commemorates the Stolen Generations—Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly removed from their families. It marks the anniversary of the 1997 "Bringing Them Home" report, a pivotal moment in Australia's journey towards truth-telling and healing.

Following this, National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) carries the theme Bridging Now to Next, emphasising the connection between our past, present, and future. This theme encourages all Australians to learn from Australian history and work collaboratively towards a more respectful and inclusive nation.

Let's use this time to reflect, learn, and commit to actions that foster reconciliation and unity.

ANZAC Day – Lest We Forget

Today, we remember all who served and sacrificed, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women.

Despite facing hardship, many First Nations people fought with courage and pride. Their sacrifices are part of our history, and we honour them today.

We will remember them.
