As we head into the warmer months, it is important for all staff to remain vigilant about sun safety and the risks associated with prolonged outdoor work.
Working on the railway can involve extended periods outdoors, exposure to direct sunlight, high UV levels and hot conditions. Taking the appropriate precautions is essential to protecting our health and maintaining a safe working environment.
Sun protection: Apply SPF 50+ broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen to exposed skin before commencing work and don't forget to reapply!
Appropriate PPE and clothing: Wear approved high-visibility, sun-protective workwear and suitable head protection in accordance with rail safety requirements and site procedures.
Hydration: Carry sufficient drinking water and drink regularly throughout your shift, particularly when working in hot conditions.
Heat stress awareness: Monitor yourself and your colleagues for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headaches, nausea, unusual fatigue and confusion. Report concerns promptly and follow workplace emergency procedures.
