The Flower Is Still There. The Moth Can't Find It.
A moth navigates by smell. It flies at night, tracking a plume of scent across open ground to a flower it has never seen.
Scientists at the University of Washington tested what happens to that plume in polluted air.
Ozone knocked the flower's key scent compounds down about 30%. Nitrate radicals, which build up at night, exactly when the moths are flying, destroyed 84% of them.
The moths stopped coming. Visits to the polluted flowers dropped by 70%. The researchers estimated the flowers would set 28% fewer seeds.
Then they modeled it globally. In many cities, pollution has cut the distance a pollinator can smell a flower by as much as 75%.
Read that again. The flower is still blooming. The moth is still flying. The message between them just doesn't arrive.
We didn't kill anything. We jammed the signal.
The compounds destroyed in that study are monoterpenes - the same molecule family that fragranced consumer products pump into urban air by the ton. We are flooding the channel with counterfeit signal while the real one breaks down.
