In a syntropic system, a garden is not meant to remain exactly the same forever.
It pulses through different stages of growth, abundance, senescence and renewal.
Some plants grow quickly and perform their role early in the system. They may provide food, shade, biomass, nitrogen or protection for slower-growing plants. But eventually, their job is done.
This is where the senescence phase becomes important.
Rather than seeing an ageing or declining plant as a failure, syntropic agriculture sees it as part of the system's natural cycle. As a plant reaches the end of its productive phase, it can be cut back and returned to the soil as biomass, creating space, light and resources for the next stage of plants to take over.
The garden moves in pulses:
Growth → Abundance → Senescence → Pruning → Biomass → Renewal → Growth again.
Each stage prepares the conditions for the next one.
This is one of the beautiful ideas behind syntropic gardening: not every plant is meant to live forever.
Some plants are pioneers. Some are protectors. Some produce food. Some build biomass.
And when their role is complete, their final contribution may be to feed the soil and make space for what comes next. 🌱♻️🌳
