Low pool water can lead to expensive equipment damage—especially to your pump.
When your water level is low (in these cases near ir at the bottom of the skimmer opening), it leaves very little water available to replenish the skimmer as the pump draws it out.
Here’s why that matters:
❌ The pump can suck in air. This can cause it to lose prime—the steady supply of water it needs to operate.
❌ Running dry can damage the pump. Without water, heat builds up and the mechanical seal can fail, causing leaks and potentially further damage. pentair.com
❌ Filtration and circulation suffer. Less water moves through the filter, so debris and contaminants aren’t removed effectively.
❌ Chlorination and heating can stop. Equipment with flow protection may shut down when there isn’t enough water moving through it. pentair.com
❌ Your suction cleaner may struggle or stop. A connected cleaner hose, like those pictured, doesn’t guarantee the pump is protected from air entering through the skimmer or vacuum plate.
⬆️ Keep the water around halfway up the skimmer opening, or at the level specified for your skimmer. If the pump is sucking air, surging or losing prime, switch it off and top up the pool before restarting. pentair.com
