With the crane doing the heavy lifting, the section goes exactly where you want it and nobody's breaking their back hauling it by hand. Having the right gear on the job isn't just about speed - it changes what's actually possible.

One of the crew cut through a branch and found a hidden lorikeet nest inside - one tiny chick and an egg, parents watching nearby. Gareth and the team called our ecologist, Issy out to assess. Jared from our ArborReuse division came too.

They decided to create a brand new hollow on the spot - used our hollow hog to carve out a new cavity with a lorikeet-specific entrance and a new roof. Chick and egg went back in safel and the parents found them within minutes.

This is what it looks like when ecology is actually part of the team, not just a box you tick.

Meet Gareth - 17+ years in the arb industry, 12 of them running his own business.

He came to Arborcraft to get into commercial work and proper big machinery, and right now he's managing power line clearing across South Melbourne.

Two or three tower crews and around eight people. Traffic management in one of Melbourne's busiest corridors. He's blocking off parking by 5:30am so the crew can actually get to the trees.

On knowledge sharing: 'It's real here. Compare it to my government job where knowledge was power and nobody shared anything. Here, senior operators walk apprentices through every step.'

If you want to work properly and keep learning, there's a spot. If you want to coast, the crew picks up on it straight away.

Rigging rope on before the city wakes up, fog still rolling through the valley below. There's something about starting a job in conditions like this - you don't get it working indoors.

A golf course gets turned into a residential estate. Hundreds of trees. A council handover on the horizon. And an ecological obligation that couldn’t just be a footnote.

That was the brief when Mirvac brought us onto the Tullamore Estate development in Doncaster.

The previous contractor had already caused safety incidents on site. Mirvac needed a team that could take a strategic approach - not just clear trees, but plan for what comes after.

We mapped native animal movement across the estate, then retained and modified trees based on exactly what species needed them. Sugar gliders, birds, possums - each requiring different hollow sizes, different heights, different placements away from high-traffic footpaths.

Green waste from the site became mulch for the estate’s gardens. Nothing wasted.

The council took over a habitat that was already functioning. Mirvac extended our contract to include ongoing maintenance.

That’s what it looks like when ecological planning is built in from the start - not added at the end when it’s already too late.

No one in the tree. No chainsaw at height. The harvester head grabs, cuts and controls the piece in one movement - the operator stays on the ground, out of the higher risk zone.

Good technology doesn't just make the job faster. It makes it safer.

Meet Issy - our ecologist, and the person who makes sure we're doing this properly.

Issy is on site before any tree comes down. She's checking hollows, surveying for fauna, managing any animals present, and signing off the clearance. Back in the office she's researching, reporting, and - right now - running tests on nest box designs made from our own ArborReuse timber.

She came to Arborcraft because the role had genuine scope. Field work, research, and real influence over how the business approaches environmental responsibility.

That's not something you find on every arb crew.

We take down trees for a living. We also build homes from them.

When hardwood comes off one of our jobs, it doesn't go to waste. Our ecologist Issy has been designing species-specific nest boxes from the timber - researched to the millimetre. Entry hole size, a baffle that stops common (and invasive!) minners flying straight in while still letting native lorikeets access the box.

We've got a lorikeet box in the yard right now. We're watching and waiting.

This is ArborReuse doing what it's supposed to.

Trees threatened by pests and disease won’t grow to their full potential, and if left untreated, can quickly turn into a liability. At Arborcraft we believe in taking a holistic approach to pest and disease management. This means getting to the root cause of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms.
