I put a call out for extra hands for a planting day today and was thrilled to have Adam and Owen come to the rescue and help plant the high quality plants I had sourced from PBM nursery, Premier Plants and All-Grow Wholesale Nursery interestingly for this job we also used a substantial number of hellebores, veldt lilies and iris that the client had rescued from the original plantings that had become tired and overgrown. Ben from Bass Coast Landscapes and Excavations as well as preparing the soil beautifully in the two massive beds, whipped up this dry river bed to take the place of a rather weedy ditch.

It has taken me a while to get around to posting this. No doubt I have been experiencing a bit of denial about Jem’s last day with us. Jem came to us as a very enthusiastic and capable teenager and spent over three years working with us starting with weekend work and helping out on school holidays then he went on to school based work experience and before long he was one of our first trainees. He became indispensable with his impeccable work ethic and attention to detail making sure we went home from each job with all the tasks done and all the tools back on the ute. It has been a great privilege to see him grow from enthusiastic teenager to confident young man and I wish him all the best for his new adventures travelling and exploring the world.

We’ve been working with our client in this garden for a little while, turning her dreams of a productive orchard into reality. We have been helping create paths, deal with weeds and soil preparation and have enjoyed working in such an idyllic setting. Here amongst the veteran fruit trees (which we are gently pruning over time to reduce size and increase productivity), the garlic crop is powering along and the seed grown brassicas are delighting the pollinators and helping to keep the weeds at bay. Mulch, mulch and more mulch with a generous side serving of decayed organic matter -via broken down hay, and mushroom compost- are the secrets of the success of this rustic reimagining.
