Energex urges solar users to shut down systems

Energex is reminding 🌦 solar PV system owners to shut down their systems as Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches, warning of potential safety risks during severe weather.

Energex Area Manager Chris Graham said it’s important to follow proper procedures to protect both residents and emergency crews.

“When you know a storm or flood is coming, it’s a good idea to shut down your solar power system,” Mr Graham said.

He said homeowners should follow their installer’s shutdown instructions, typically found on the inverter or main switchboard.

“Most shutdown procedures will ask you to turn off the inverter AC mains isolator, usually located in the meter box,” he said.

“It is very important to turn the AC mains isolator off first and then also turn off the photovoltaic (PV) array DC isolator, which is usually next to the inverter.”

Mr Graham said that under no circumstances should anyone climb onto their roof to touch solar panels or components.

“Customers should not attempt to reconnect solar PV systems after severe storms or roof damage, as their roof may be electrified,” Mr Graham said.

“Safety should always be the number one priority.

“Solar panels and their cables should always be treated as if they are live.”

Recently, a heated debate has emerged in the Senate about whether solar panels should be fully manufactured or merely assembled in Australia. This discussion is part of the broader scrutiny of energy policies, including the $1 billion Solar Sunshot program aimed at boosting local solar panel production.

What do you think? Should Australia focus on manufacturing solar panels locally to create more jobs and ensure quality, or is assembling them here sufficient to meet our renewable energy goals? Share your thoughts 💬👇

🌞 Curious About How Solar Panels Work? 🌞

Ever wondered how those shiny panels on rooftops turn sunlight into electricity? 🤔 It’s pretty cool! Here’s a quick and easy breakdown:

Sunlight Hits the Panels: Solar panels are made up of special cells called photovoltaic (PV) cells. When sunlight hits these cells, it shakes things up and knocks electrons loose from their atoms.

Creating an Electric Field: These PV cells have an electric field that gets those free electrons moving in a certain direction, creating an electric current.

Converting DC to AC: This current is direct current (DC). An inverter then steps in to convert DC into alternating current (AC), which is the type of electricity we use in our homes.

Powering Your Home: The AC electricity flows through your home’s electrical panel, powering your lights, appliances, and more!

Extra Energy: If your solar panels make more electricity than you need, the extra can be sent back to the grid, often earning you credits on your electricity bill.

Harnessing the power of the sun is not only amazing but also a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and save on energy costs! 🌍💡
