(Farm) Life in plastic, ain't fantastic.

The previous steward of this land used to own many cars. This is but one area of the garden where they left behind a plastic tarp. One item which has become thousands of tiny plastic bits, scattered around our soil, tangled within the grass and the capew**d, buried underneath rocks, covered with moss...

We've found that the first step to planting beautiful gardens and food forests in this place, is cleaning!

❇️ Broad bean flowers ❇️

The delicious fava beans are amongst the most ancient plants in cultivation, around 6000 BCE or earlier.

Besides their nutritional value, these gems are nitrogen fixers, great cover crops, and can survive harsh climates (they can overwinter in Melbourne!) - making them an easy to grow veggie.

The beans are a staple of many cuisines around the world, from falafel to soups, snacks and dips... talk about versatility!

🏵️ Fancy pansy 🏵️

Pansies are the perfect example of how humans can change nature very quickly. The pansy's progenitor, heartsease, was considered a w**d. In the course of 20 years, more than 400 named hybrids had been developed, becoming a favourite among the public till today. 

The name pansy is derived from pensée, the French word for "thought". These hybrid flowers can withstand Melbourne's winters, but are usually grown as annuals.

The fire croton is so lit 🔥🔥.

A truly versatile and striking indoor plant! The cultivars of Codiaeum variegatum come in different colours and leaf forms - and it is actually considered that each and every single plant is unique.

These stunning beauties need to keep warm, as cooler temperatures make them drop their amazing foliage. Ours has been bracing Melbourne's autumn and winter in our bedside table 🛏️❄️.

Did you know solar Spring 🌞 arrived today to the southern hemisphere?

We Aussies say Spring begins on September 1st, which is the meteorological season.

However, if you are a gardener, it is good to be aware of where the solar seasons sit. The start of solar Spring is 45 days before this year's Spring equinox (September 22nd) - and shall pass into solar Summer 45 days after.
