Melbourne's iconic "Pantscraper" - there's more to Collins Arch than meets the eye!

Here are 4 things you might not know about this Melbourne landmark:

👖 1. The "Pantscraper" nickname
Its unusual silhouette resembles a giant pair of trousers, earning it one of Melbourne's most memorable architectural nicknames.

🌤️ 2. A design shaped by planning restrictions
The original proposal was reduced in height by 21.6 metres to minimise overshadowing of the Yarra River, showing how planning requirements can influence architectural design.

🏊 3. A skybridge with a swimming pool
The towers are connected by an eight-storey skybridge, with residential amenities including a swimming pool, gym and residents' lounge on Level 34.

🌳 4. More than just a skyscraper
The development also helped deliver Market Street Park, bringing a new public green space to Melbourne's C*D for the first time in decades.

Designed by SHoP Architects and Woods Bagot and built by Multiplex, the $1.2 billion Collins Arch development has become one of Melbourne's most recognisable architectural landmarks.

🏗️Construction has officially started on Melbourne Central's $170 million retail expansion, one of the C*D's biggest retail builds underway right now. The GPT Group, working with Maben and ARM Architects, will add approximately 7,800sqm of retail space across levels 3 and 4 — lifting the centre's total footprint to around 63,000sqm.

The expansion will bring Melbourne's first flagship Books Kinokuniya store, a large-format entertainment hub, and more than 10 new dining and food retailers.

It's also part of a bigger shift — Melbourne Central will become an 18/7 extended-trading destination, tapping into the city's growing nighttime economy.🌃 The centre already pulls in 55 million+ visitors a year with 100% occupancy.

Completion is set for 2028.

Wood Marsh's brief for the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), completed in 2002, was as much urban planning as architecture: activate a dead industrial pocket of Southbank while housing three arts organisations under one roof.🏗️

Corten steel cladding does double duty — its rust isn't wear, it's the finished surface, chosen to echo the warehouses and foundries once on site.

ACCA, Chunky Move, and Playbox Theatre operate as distinct tenancies within the one structure, while the courtyard and outdoor exhibition space were built to stay publicly accessible 24/7 — access engineered into the brief, not bolted on after.

The result won the Australian Institute of Architects Victoria Institutional Architectural Award.🏆

Over the last decade, Melbourne has added over 30 skyscrapers to its skyline, holding its title as #1 tallest skyline in Oceania, and 24th in the world.

It now has more high-rises than any other Australian city: 758 buildings, 77+ of them true skyscrapers (150 m+).

What a wild trajectory for a city that had a legal 40m height limit less than 100 years ago. 🚀

The standouts:

🥇 Australia 108 — 316.7m, 100 floors
Melbourne's current tallest. First tower in the Southern Hemisphere to break 100+ floors.

🥈 Aurora Melbourne Central — 270.5m, 84 floors
Melbourne's 3rd tallest. One of the last major completions before the 2020s boom.

🥉 West Side Place Tower A — 268.7m, 81 floors
Part of a $2B, 4-tower complex, with a Ritz-Carlton inside.

Queens Place North Tower — 252.8m, 79 floors
Once its twin is built, this'll be the tallest twin-tower project in Australia.

West Side Place Tower D — 239m, 72 floors
Same complex — West Side Place alone added 4 skyscrapers to the city.

Victoria One — 246.8m, 76 floors
