B.E. Architecture has been shortlisted in the Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), with Beaconsfield Residence and Kooyongkoot Residence recognised across categories including Residential Single, Residential Interior Curation and Colour.

The awards program is put together by Australian Design Review and winners will be announced at a gala event later this year.

In the rear extension of our South Yarra terrace, the exterior material language continues quietly inside. Sand-based mineral-painted brickwork runs through the space, while off-white concrete beams and inlaid ceiling panels define the first-floor structure.

The addition is conceived as a series of quiet interventions within the existing fabric. The fireplace is treated as part of the original room, allowing new elements to read as freestanding pieces.

Minimally detailed stainless-steel kitchen cabinetry sits alongside off-white concrete supports and Rosso Levanto marble benchtops, reading as individual freestanding objects within a broader collection of furniture pieces that bring softness and a layered eclecticism to the space.

Timber screening is a defining element of this Toorak project, moderating light, privacy and outlook. This language continues internally, where finely detailed oak battens line the double-height entry, creating a cocooning embrace upon arrival.

A gently curving stair overlooks an ornamental picture garden, drawing natural light deep into both levels of the two-storey stair foyer.

A renovation to a Victorian terrace in South Yarra, the project works with the existing brick walls and boundary fences to define a series of private courtyards and gardens. The new extension is conceived as a quiet intervention, almost as though it has been inserted within the discovered brick remnants of the original site.

The existing and new brickwork where required is bagged and finished with a sand-based mineral coating, extending internally to blur the distinction between inside and out and reinforcing a restrained material palette.

Spanning between the existing boundary walls, a singular off-white concrete lintel and continuous bronze-framed glazing define the new living space with the lightest possible architectural gesture.

Conceived as a protective extension to an existing Edwardian home in Armadale, the design responds to a corner site exposed to both a side street and rear laneway. The building extends to the site’s boundaries, forming a private walled courtyard to the living, dining and kitchen spaces.

The use of sawn grey limestone walls and floors continue from the exterior into the interior along with concealed cavity sliding glazed panels to allow the living spaces to open seamlessly to the courtyard.

Above, a linear skylight draws daylight deep into the plan, revealing the texture and tonal variation of the limestone while reinforcing the calm, protective nature of the space.

In contrast to its solid, protective street presence, our Hawthorn House opens to a generous walled courtyard, creating a private landscape at the heart of the home. The courtyard screens neighbouring buildings while selectively framing gardens and distant city views.

The rear form takes on a pavilion-like quality, with panoramic sections of glazing, while retaining a sense of containment beneath its deep-set, continuous solid roof form.

Project Architect Matt Breen and Director Andrew Piva are currently exploring a range of stone selections, colours and finishing techniques that will define the material character and identity of the home.

Revealing more of our Hawthorn home, currently in design.

Presenting as solid, protective, and private to the street, this home opens inward to expansive walls of glazing and a generous central courtyard beyond.

The arrival sequence meanders around an existing Golden Elm, framed by sculptural planting and a restrained landscape response, where the solid façade creates a sense of intrigue while offering a closer experience of the stone blockwork and architectural elements that define the home’s character.
