Unique sites often require a unique response.
Set on the water’s edge on Sydney’s North Shore, this home negotiates a dramatic fall from the upper street level down to the shoreline below. The challenge was to resolve several storeys of level change while maintaining the ease and clarity of a single level, connected home. Rather than allowing the slope to fragment the experience, the site was carefully quarried to create a single-level living plane with direct access to the outdoor entertaining, pool and beach levels beyond.
A central north-facing courtyard became key to the planning strategy, drawing natural light deep into the plan and creating moments of outlook, pause and connection across each level.
Although materiality, detailing, and interiors play an important role in the character of our projects, the foundation of the design lies in its planning: creating spatial arrangements that are both considered and dynamic, while revealing the full potential of the site.
