The bark is doing a lot of work. It's not just covering the tree - the cambium layer just underneath is how the tree moves water and nutrients around.
Whipper snipper strikes and lawnmower hits break through it repeatedly, and the tree can't defend against that kind of ongoing damage the way it can with a single wound.
If you're managing a site with trees, keep the machinery away from the base. It matters more than it looks.
