The bark is doing a lot of work. It's not just covering the tree - the cambium layer just underneath is how the tree moves water and nutrients around.

Whipper snipper strikes and lawnmower hits break through it repeatedly, and the tree can't defend against that kind of ongoing damage the way it can with a single wound.

If you're managing a site with trees, keep the machinery away from the base. It matters more than it looks.

Most eucalypts have a survival mechanism that lets them come back after fire, drought, or being cut down entirely. It's called a lignotuber - sometimes called mallee roots.

The root base stores nutrients and can re-sprout new growth completely independently of the original trunk if it dies or is removed. Eucalypts have been working around disturbance for millions of years.

If you're working with gums and you haven't thought about the lignotuber, you're only seeing half the picture.

One of the crew cut through a branch and found a hidden lorikeet nest inside - one tiny chick and an egg, parents watching nearby. Gareth and the team called our ecologist, Issy out to assess. Jared from our ArborReuse division came too.

They decided to create a brand new hollow on the spot - used our hollow hog to carve out a new cavity with a lorikeet-specific entrance and a new roof. Chick and egg went back in safel and the parents found them within minutes.

This is what it looks like when ecology is actually part of the team, not just a box you tick.

Meet Gareth - 17+ years in the arb industry, 12 of them running his own business.

He came to Arborcraft to get into commercial work and proper big machinery, and right now he's managing power line clearing across South Melbourne.

Two or three tower crews and around eight people. Traffic management in one of Melbourne's busiest corridors. He's blocking off parking by 5:30am so the crew can actually get to the trees.

On knowledge sharing: 'It's real here. Compare it to my government job where knowledge was power and nobody shared anything. Here, senior operators walk apprentices through every step.'

If you want to work properly and keep learning, there's a spot. If you want to coast, the crew picks up on it straight away.
