Just a small deck completed prior to Christmas.
Small block and house renovation meant the only yard site here at the rear of the house was not user friendly.
We added the deck to give some flat area back. Usually we line the edges with the decking also where shown uncovered here (colorbond fencing is going hard up against it and above). No balustrade either as the fence will become the barrier.
The decking used is 140mm x 19mm Kwila (most commonly referred to as Merbau). An interesting fact is that this species of tree once grew in Australia but was over harvested and none is harvested here any more.
All deck fixings are stainless steel screws for a superior hold and longevity too.
Left to the elements it will oxidise and go grey. Otherwise a quick clean and oil (2 initial coats) will highlight the warm colours and help preserve the look. For ongoing best results it should be oiled every 6 months with a single coat (prep wash and clean prior). Yes that's a lot of work we know to maintain a look, though with the right tools and approach it's a quick job to maintain your deck for enjoyment of use and ambience of looks not to mention extend the lifespan of it too.
