Our dear friend and colleague Wesley Hindmarch sadly passed away over Easter after a long illness.
Wes was born in Hobart in 1973. After early work as a painter in the building trade, he studied Architecture at the University of Tasmania under Paddy Dorney, graduating in 1999. He went on to travel and work across Europe, later completing studies at the Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar and working with Álvaro Siza in Portugal—an experience that deeply shaped his practice.
Back in Tasmania, Wes co-founded Dock4 Architects, helping evolve the practice from residential work into broader commercial and community projects. Guided by a strong social and political commitment to architecture, he consistently advocated for its role in serving communities and driving positive change.
In 2014 he moved to Melbourne before later relocating with his family to Kangaroo Valley, NSW, where he founded Local Architect South Coast. There he continued to build a practice grounded in community, place, and collaboration—working on projects ranging from small homes to award-winning public and sporting facilities.
Wes was prolific, generous in spirit, and driven by the belief that “nothing is too small” when it comes to meaningful architecture. His work often brought together artists, craftspeople, environmentalists, and First Nations collaborators, reflecting his deep respect for people, culture, and Country.
His legacy continues through the practices he shaped, the communities he worked with, and the many lives he influenced.
Wes will be greatly missed and remembered with deep respect.
