That nasty smell coming from your drain isnโt something you just have to put up with!
There are a few common reasons your drain might be giving off an unpleasant odour:
๐ฟ Build-up in the pipes - Soap, hair, grease, food and other debris can build up over time and start to smell.
๐ง A dry trap - that curved pipe under your sink holds water to block sewer gas from creeping back up. If a drain isn't used often, it can dry out and let smells through.
๐ฆ Bacteria and organic matter - Even a small amount of trapped waste can create some seriously unpleasant smells.
๐ฝ A drainage or sewer issue - Persistent smells can sometimes indicate a bigger problem with the drainage system, particularly if multiple drains around the property are affected.
๐ง๏ธ Stormwater drains can smell too, especially when organic matter, leaves and other debris have built up.
A smelly drain isn't always just a dirty drain. If the smell keeps coming back after cleaning, itโs worth getting it checked rather than simply masking the odour.
