Choose real turf if the spot gets decent sun and mowing does not bother you. It stays cooler underfoot in summer and costs less up front.

Choose artificial if the area sits in deep shade, never dries out, runs down the narrow side of the house, or gets destroyed by the dog faster than grass can recover.

Either way, the prep underneath decides how long it lasts. That is the part worth spending on.

People think the grass decides how good an artificial lawn is. It does not. The base underneath does.

We compact it, make sure it drains, seam the joins and pin the edges down. Get that right and the lawn stays flat and dry for years. Rush it and you are looking at lumps and puddles by the second winter.

This one is in Wheelers Hill. It stays green through summer, never needs mowing, and the dog cannot wear a bare patch into the corner.

"Can I water the garden from my phone?" Yes, and customers mention this upgrade back to us more than any other.

We install Hunter and Rain Bird wifi controllers and set them up on the app before we leave, so nobody is left reading instructions after we drive off.

Every zone runs its own schedule. Your lawn, beds and pots all need different amounts of water, and a single blanket timer gives all three the wrong thing.

It also helps when you are away. If a heatwave hits while you are up the coast, you can change the watering from wherever you are.

Most of a good irrigation system sits where you will never see it.

Drip line runs along the base of the plants and waters the roots directly. Nothing blows away in the wind and nothing evaporates off the top of the mulch.

We also split the system into zones. Garden beds need a fraction of the water a lawn does, so they get their own line and their own schedule.

☀️ Dark pavers get hot. If you have ever crossed a patio barefoot in January, you know the feeling.

Travertine stays cooler underfoot than bluestone or dark concrete, so we usually recommend it around pools and anywhere the afternoon sun hits hard.

We laid this one in a French pattern. Four tile sizes repeat across the surface, which stops it looking like a grid.

"How long until the kids can run on it?" 👟

Asked before nearly every turf job, so here is the straight answer.

Light use after about a fortnight. Two to four weeks before it is properly rooted in. At week three, grab a corner and give it a gentle tug. If it lifts, it wants more water and more time. If it holds, off they go.

That is the whole appeal of instant turf. It arrives as a finished lawn, instead of six weeks spent staring at dirt and hoping something comes up.

September is the best month of the year for it in Melbourne. Warm enough to root, cool enough not to stress.

🐕 Every backyard with a dog has one. The bald racing line from the back door to the fence.

This one got Eureka Kikuyu, laid to a pebble border. Kikuyu grows fast and repairs itself, so the worn track fills back in on its own instead of glaring at you all summer.

The trade off is honest. It grows quickly in every direction, so you will be mowing more often. Most families take that deal happily.
