It has been a while since we have shared anything, so we wanted to share a few views from our recent projects.
Our client for this first project was eager to bring their outdoor entertainment area further into the garden while surrounding themselves with an inviting planting palette. Integrating a series of white and grey pots around the structural element gives height to the planting while still the garden is establishing, and the use of illuminated screens along the fence should give the whole garden a larger feeling in the evenings, as though the next room of the garden is just past the screens. With several edible plants closest to the house (and BBQ area) and the scent of a mock orange tree flowering, this is a garden that will be used for a long time to come.

For the plant pots, we provided a range of potential species which would suit depending on what pots the client ends up deciding on. Initially aiming for an evergreen planting scheme, we focused on tones, contrast and structure in the species, electing for compact conifers and junipers for most pots. An olive tree, bay tree and mock orange to give some more dimension, scent and culinary use. At the ground level, we focused more on using natives and particularly ones which were tolerant of full sun. The final design brought in some coloured foliage and flowering plants which will be attractive all through the year.

A sketch of an unused structure from a recent project. The structure would extend the existing alfresco space into the garden and over a new paved space. The design of the structure frame would provide a greater sense of height and openness within while also being quite visually appealing.

Added timber posts with cables between along the fence side were designed to accommodate climbing plants such as a grape vine or other ornamental climber. The aim of which was providing a break between the outdoor entertainment space and the fence itself. This concept was aiming to maximise eye level green space within quite a limited space. Particularly without the room for taller trees as quite a lot of back gardens in new estates find themselves.

While this particular design didn't suit the needs of our client, it may suit another outdoor space. Thinking of pushing your outdoor entertaining further into the garden?

A spreading ground cover is perfect for a narrow space such as the narrow side of a house and provides a nice green layer to your garden. Doing the double duty of keeping weeds at bay and filling out a space; most ground covers are shade tolerant since they would naturally form part of the undergrowth and generally very light on their water requirements. Many will put up with light foot traffic and will naturally form sort of pathways providing additional visual framing.

There are many, many species of ground cover plant and they range from delicate rockery planting to scented flowers to edible herbs to robust stiff natives. And depending how they're used can create and craft a number of different looks and styles in your garden.

Looking for a nice way to fill out a space? Talk to us about how you could introduce a new ground cover into your outdoor space.

It's winter! So we've refreshed our logo a little. Lost our leaves and look a little frosty. What do you think?
Winter is also a great time to plan something new in your outdoor space.

With so many great details in this project, it was hard to single out just one to highlight. This entertainment and firepit area will utilise reclaimed brick as both paving and to then build two seats around the firepit. The brick pavers are to be taken from another area of the property as part of our design.

A series of steel posts, connected by steel cables will work to encase the area as a real outdoor room. Over time, the structure will have climbing plants work their way up, over and around, further encasing the space and looking different throughout the year with scented flowering plants setting the mood.

On the whole, this space didn't actually change too much from our initial concept sketch and we cannot wait to see how it looks once constructed. A big thank you to our client for getting us involved in their project.

Informal planting and ground covers in an outdoor space can go a long way to creating a garden that changes over time. Ground covers; like this ivy or native plants like a myoporum spread gradually over the landscape. While a deciduous tree above creates natural mulch in the autumn as leaves break down. Stones or rockwork can either stand out in a bold statement of colour and texture or, they can sit back into the space as the ground covers grow around them.

Using ground covers is an easy way to introduce another layer into your garden visually, but they also help to control weeds, retain soil and bark.

Here are a couple of images from a recently finished concept design. The brief from the client was to turn a very flat back garden into a space for outdoor entertainment, with varying heights, plenty of interest and texture. Working with a contemporary and slightly rustic aesthetic, we designed a landscape that maximises use from the garden while still providing plenty of room to play.

Our key design elements for this project are firstly the large paved space, surrounded by raised timber garden beds and feature planter. We envisioned a built-in timber bench seat across part of the planter wall. Changes in level break up the planting across the back fence and using a corten steel piece as an edge material provides further variation. The entertainment area is completed by four tall recycled timber posts connected to the house by catenary lights.

For visual difference, we suggested using a slate chip mulch instead of a bark mulch. The grey of the slate will compliment the dark pavers and contrast against the timber planter beds. Slate is also great at resisting weeds.

Planting wise, we envisioned plenty of herb and edible plants around the outdoor entertaining area moving into larger screening plants moving across the back fence. Room for a couple of citrus trees. Wrapping around and down into smaller shrubs. Overall we aimed for a balance between native plants and edible plants.

We hope to be able to share photos of the completed project later this year after it has been constructed.

A tree with a broad canopy not only provides shade, wind blocking and cooling on hot days but also contributes to the micro-climate in your garden allowing you to plant a wider variety of shade loving plants.

Being surrounded by nature, trees and green has been shown to be both stress relieving and good for mental health in general.

Improve your garden and mental health in one go. Consider a canopy tree for your outdoor space. Speak to us to see what will work for you.

Does your garden have a really shaded area, a bit damp, nothing seems to really take off except weeds or moss? There's nothing wrong with a bit of moss, but you could consider a Miniature Cyclamen. These pretty little plants have small, variegated leaves and flower in a range of colours. They will add a splash of colour and a nice detail to your garden.

Do you have a spot for some of these in your outdoor space?

Why choose a Landscape Designer?

In a nutshell, a landscape designer can translate your ideas into a cohesive design that can be built by either yourself or others. The biggest difference between a traditional landscaper and a landscape designer is in the design process. Landscape design as we approach it, involves back and forth communication with the client from the initial brief to the final handover while refining the design outcome at every stage. Easy to understand sketches, plans and details are drawn up along the way and plenty of information on plant/tree species before anything needs to be purchased.

Other reasons to engage a landscape designer include:
• Lower cost than changing the design mid-build
• Fresh perspective on your outdoor space
• Suggestions and details that may not have been considered by the client
• Researched and considered design elements
• Design package that may be constructed DIY or be passed to a landscaper

A quick sketch design for a front garden. It combines elements of traditional gardens with contemporary Australian plants and variety. The design screens off the front door and front windows of the house from the street while providing interesting views of the property and looking out from the house itself.

The design also forgoes any lawn in favour of a bark mulch, ditching the need for weekend mowing, but it also cuts down on watering requirements. Upkeep on bark mulch is comparatively low only needing occasional weeding and topping up where needed every couple of years as it naturally breaks down.

Solar lights are a cheap and effective way to line a driveway or feature particular elements of the garden. In this design, the feature letterbox and one of the flowering shrubs would have either a solar spotlight or up light. The driveway is lined with alternating solar lights and native grasses, again, chosen to be easily maintained and to have low water needs.
