Day 14 of 50 Days to 50 Years.

“With or Without You.”

At 14 I taped it off the radio and felt something I couldn’t name. The slow build, the measured yet raw voice, the chorus that landed like a revelation — it made me feel grown-up before I was.

At 54 the song is a mirror to my life. Love that bruises. Faith that wavers. Dreams that slip through your fingers. The line “My hands are tied, my body bruised” carries a different weight now.

In 2019, during the Joshua Tree Tour in Melbourne, I stood with my family singing every word.

This is my painting of it: a stormy night, two figures connected by a lifeboat, opposite shadows, a distant shore, and a setting sun.

Day 13 of 50 Days to 50 Years.

“13 (There Is A Light)” from Songs of Experience.

This one feels like Bono’s last letter — the one he’d slip under the door if he never came home.

It begins with the terrors of the night creeping into day, then slowly turns into a quiet insistence that light still exists. The question at its heart is simple and hard: are you tough enough to be kind?

It reaches back to “Song for Someone” and becomes a blessing not only for his children, but for the child still inside all of us.

The final plea stays with me:
“I know the world is done / But you don’t have to be.”

Don’t let the light go out.

"Fitter, happier, more productive."

Everyone treats this line like Thom Yorke saw the future - AI, burnout, the algorithm flattening us into checklists.

It wasn't written looking forward. It was written looking inward. A diary entry disguised as a list, a man talking himself into being okay in the only language that felt honest.

The prophecy reading is clever. The diary reading is true.

Day 12 of 50 Days to 50 Years.

This is my painting of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”

In the top left I painted the city being left behind and the journey into the mountains. Bottom left holds the old temptations — the “kissing honey lips” and the fingertips of desire. In the centre a figure stands on the mountain, believing. On the right the colours and the cross bleed into each other.

The song has always felt like a clear-eyed testament to hope and the ongoing search for purpose, belonging, and something greater. Restless. Yearning. Still moving forward.

Day 11 of 50 Days to 50 Years.

“Kite.”

In 2001, after my dad passed away, we left the hospital to go and tell my grandfather. As the car started, this song came on the radio.

It felt like my dad was with us in that moment, saying the words:
“I know this is not goodbye.”

This photo shows four generations of us men.

The song still holds that day. The lines about release, about not being afraid, about love that doesn’t end with goodbye — they have never left me.

Ten days into this countdown and I’m still surprised by how much the music still has to say.

Some songs don’t fade.
They just wait for the right version of you to catch up.

That’s one of the quiet gifts of carrying the same band with you across decades — the songs keep revealing new layers as you change.

Day 9 of 50 Days to 50 Years.

December 2010. U2 360° Tour.

I managed to sneak to the front, met some of Jay-Z’s band, and decided to pretend I was a journalist. Started asking questions about the stage design like I belonged there.

It was ridiculous and perfect.

Then the lights went down and “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight” came in. That song still carries the feeling of that night for me.

U2 somehow stayed in the room with us.

They kept changing, kept risking, kept reaching. Even after all these years they can still surprise the people who’ve been listening the longest.

That willingness to keep becoming something new is rare — and it’s part of why the music still feels alive.

You drop the needle and the first thing you hear is pure street-corner sunlight.
Four guys on an Oakland sidewalk. Washtub bass. Washboard. Kids watching from the curb. “Bring a nickel, tap your feet.”
Then, less than half an hour later, the same band is staring at a palace lawn on fire.
That dual heart — pure joy one minute, quiet class rage the next — is why W***y and the Poor Boys still feels more alive than almost anything else from 1969.
I just wrote a full track-by-track book on the album. Every song. The grooves. The stories. The studio secrets. The imperfections that still keep these tracks breathing more than fifty years later.
From “Down on the Corner” to “Fortunate Son” to the unresolved smoke of “Effigy” — this is the record that refused to choose between the nickel and the fire.

Day 7 of 50 Days to 50 Years.

This is my painting of “Zoo Station” — the opening track on Achtung Baby.

When I first heard it I thought: what the f**k is U2 doing?

It was nothing like any album they had made before. It still feels unlike anything else.

The line “Time is a train / Makes the future the past” has always stayed with me. I tried to put that feeling into the painting — the speed, the anxiety, the sense that the future is both inevitable and somehow already slipping away. It also feels like a perfect soundtrack for the way we live now: information overload, endless scrolling, and the constant performance of who we think we should be online.
