Selling or renting out your place in WA? Before it changes hands, your smoke alarms have to be compliant: photoelectric, hardwired, and not past their use-by. You also need at least two safety switches covering your power and lighting.

This one catches a lot of owners out right before settlement, which is the worst possible time to find out. We check the lot and get you sorted with no last-minute panic.

Winter's here, and so are the blackouts. Four quick things worth doing before the next one:

Get a torch that actually works
Put surge protection on your good gear
Know where your switchboard is
Save a local sparky's number

That last one's us, by the way. Stay safe out there.

Your switchboard is the bit on the wall doing the quiet work of keeping your home safe. Three signs yours might be due for an upgrade: lights that flicker for no reason, switches that feel warm to touch, and fuses that keep blowing.

Sound familiar? Give us a call and we'll take a look, or book a look at margaretriverelectrical.com.au

Storm season's still happening this winter, so the generator questions have started up again. Here's the bit a lot of people miss: a generator is only as safe as the way it's wired in. Plug one straight into a power point and you can push power back down the line and put lives at risk. The safe way is a changeover switch, fitted by a licensed electrician.

We've broken down how it works, and why it's worth sorting before the next big blow, on the blog.

Meet Tom, one of our sparkies. We fired five quick questions at him. First tool he reaches for? Pliers. Coffee order? Latte. And the one thing he reckons every homeowner should know: don't do your own electrical work.

Good advice from a good bloke. Full spotlight's on the blog.
