🚜 Investing in the Future at Maitland Plant Hire 🚜

Every experienced operator started somewhere, and today we’re proud to be investing in the next generation.

Our newest casual team member, Max Watson, has been working with Maitland Plant Hire carrying out general labouring and maintenance duties, and has now started his practical training on our Bobcat T590 Posi-Track under close supervision.

Learning to operate earthmoving equipment isn’t just about moving dirt—it’s about understanding machine control, site awareness, safety, reading the ground conditions, working efficiently and respecting the equipment. These are skills that can only be developed through quality training and hands-on experience.

Over the coming weeks, Max will continue building his experience before completing his formal competency training to gain his operator ticket. From there, he’ll also begin learning to operate our excavators and expand his skills across the range of equipment we use every day.

As a family-owned local business, it’s rewarding to pass on over 30 years of earthmoving knowledge and see the next generation developing the skills needed to work safely and professionally in our industry.

We’re looking forward to watching Max grow into a confident operator and become an important part of the Maitland Plant Hire team.

Welcome aboard, Max! 👊

Quality earthmoving. Professional service. Building the future, one job at a time.

A bit of a setback yesterday afternoon!

One of the major hydraulic hoses on the Bobcat decided it had had enough and let go. Thankfully it was reasonably accessible from underneath the cab, so I was able to remove it and head over to Pirtek Rutherford, who remanufactured a new hose for me on the spot. Great service as always!

By the time I got back it was too dark to finish the repair, so I was back on site at 6:00 am this morning to get stuck into it. Hose fitted, hydraulic oil topped up, machine cleaned down, and we’re back in business and onto the next job.

The hose wasn’t cheap, but that’s all part of keeping the gear maintained and the business moving forward. Thankfully my 15 years as a motor mechanic still come in handy from time to time!

From Slippery Farm Track to Safe All-Weather Access 🚜

Recently, my wife and I were asked to rectify a section of farm roadway that had become slippery and potentially dangerous during wet weather. The road runs alongside a creek and presented a few unique challenges that required careful planning.

Key considerations included:
✅ Only certified quarry-produced material could be used.
✅ A shallow high-pressure water pipeline ran directly beneath the roadway, sitting as little as 50-100mm below the surface.

To ensure the job was completed safely and correctly, we:

• Marked out the work area.
• Engaged a qualified service locating company to accurately identify the water pipeline.
• Removed unsuitable material, including loose soil, grass and organic matter.
• Imported and placed 120 tonnes of quality road base.
• Spread and compacted the material using our Positrack.
• Trimmed the surface to achieve the desired finish.

Normally, a smooth drum roller would provide superior compaction, however, with the water pipe being so shallow, the risk of damaging the service outweighed the benefits. A more cautious approach was the right decision on this project.

The end result speaks for itself – the finished roadway now comfortably supports a fully loaded truck and provides a much safer, more reliable access road for the property owners.

Sometimes the best outcome isn’t about using the biggest machine or the fastest method; it’s about careful planning, understanding the risks, and choosing the right approach for the job.
