🔨 New bay window — Thornbury

The old bay on this weatherboard cottage was one flat run of dark-framed glass under a rusting hood. It did the job, but it had nothing to do with the house.

They wanted to see it before they committed, so we measured the existing opening and put a visual together first — then built it.

The old unit came out, the opening was squared up and reframed below the sill, and a new three-panel bay went in: double-hung sashes with colonial bars, set to the splay of the original. The boards underneath were stripped back and re-clad so the runs line straight through either side.

Inside is where a bay is won or lost — sill, architraves and skirting all scribed around two angles and still reading as one line.

✔ Old bay removed, opening squared up and reframed
✔ New three-panel bay fitted — double-hung sashes with colonial bars
✔ Weatherboards under the bay replaced and lined through
✔ Sill, architraves and skirting scribed around the splay
✔ Plaster made good below the sill and the returns
✔ Masked up and painted inside and out

The result is a bay that looks like it has always been part of the house — square, weather-tight, and finished to the same line as the boards either side.

🔨 Pergola, Laserlight roof and a Merbau deck — Sunshine North

This one started as a strip of bare dirt down the side of the house — string lines and post holes before a single board went near it.

The frame is where a deck is won or lost. Posts set in rapid-set concrete, then treated pine bearers and joists squared off the house and levelled right through. Every dip in a subframe shows up in the finished surface.

Then 140mm Merbau over the top. Wider boards mean fewer joins and a cleaner run — and they're far less forgiving of a frame that isn't true. The deck steps up to a raised landing at the sliding door, so you walk straight out at floor level.

Over the top, a new pergola framed off the house and roofed in Laserlight, so it's covered without turning the back rooms dark.

✔ Site set out, post holes dug, posts set in rapid-set concrete
✔ Treated pine bearers and joists, levelled through
✔ 140mm Merbau decking laid throughout
✔ Raised landing built up to the door threshold
✔ New pergola framed off the house
✔ Laserlight roof sheeting fitted over the top

The result is a run of bare dirt turned into somewhere you'd actually sit — covered, level with the house, and sitting on a frame set out to hold that line.

🔨 Before & after — riverside deck rebuild, Maribyrnong

This deck had done its years. The original Merbau had weathered back to grey, boards had cupped and lifted, and it was well past the point where another sand and oil would have saved it.

The layout was worth keeping, though. A sweeping deck wraps around a sunken paved circle with a curved bench seat running around it — and that shape is exactly what makes a rebuild like this slow. Every board on the curve, and every piece of the seating, has to be cut individually to fit. There's barely a straight run in it.

So the old surface came off, back to the existing frame, and the whole lot went back down in Eko Decking, Rivergum Red.

✔ Worn Merbau decking surface removed in full
✔ Stripped back to the existing frame
✔ New surface laid in Eko Decking, Rivergum Red
✔ Curved deck edge and sunken seating rebuilt to the original radius
✔ Every seating piece individually cut to fit the curve
✔ Steps and landings rebuilt in matching board

The result is the same curves the owners always liked, with a surface that's ready for the next stretch of Melbourne weather.

🔨 Eaves, fascia, windows and steps — Maribyrnong

The new deck was the headline on this job. The repairs around the house were the part that mattered just as much and photographs half as well.

The eave lining had gone. Sections had rotted through and dropped away, leaving the roofline open and the ends of the rafters exposed to the weather. That's a problem that stays small while it's only lining boards — and stops being small once water finds the framing behind them.

So the failed sections came out, the eaves were lined back up in new timber, the fascia and windows were sorted, and the side access steps were rebuilt in treated pine.

✔ Rotted eave lining cut out and replaced in new timber
✔ Open sections along the roofline closed back up
✔ Fascia repaired
✔ Window repairs completed
✔ Side access steps rebuilt in treated pine
✔ New timber left ready for paint

The result is a roofline that's sealed again — dealt with while it was still a carpentry job.
