PHOENIX IN SOUTHBANK

We recently had the privilege of tending to these iconic palms Phoenix canariensis that frame southbank lagoon, these trees are normally wrapped up in netting for trunk protection, we had to remove the netting to clean off as much of the decayed fronds as possible and pruned the crown back to a more manageable size. A massive thanks to the Southbank Hort team for assisting us with the use of the EWP’s and helping with the clean up, more to come on these stunning trees.

Happy Fathers Day to all the awesome dads out there, while running a business is an important part of my life, it’s holds far less weight in my personal decision making then being a dad. I started Arborspec to have the security of knowing when my kids need me I am there, every sports day, every first day, every achievement they make, I’m there to make sure they know they should be proud of themselves, and how proud they make me.

That’s why I keep them with me even at work, each side of the truck has the tree their name represents and a subtle birth date.

Tallow Wolfe the Eucalyptus microcorys (Tallow wood) one of my favourite trees, incredible bark, form and flowers, these trees have always stood out to me in the landscape from when I first started learning arboriculture. A true icon of the bush on the east coast.

And Rhythm Mallee the Mallee gum habit formed by certain Eucalyptus species in arid areas of Australia, I remember my pop always talking about the Mallee Bull, fit, strong, healthy and near unbreakable, the same attributes I hope he possesses.

One more game to go for these Superstars ⭐️ ⭐️ the rain today didn’t manage to dampen their spirits, just their socks.

HABITAT REPLACEMENT PROJECT

We proudly donated our time to assist with installing some suitable artificial hollows from and designed for the endangered GREATER GLIDER population of Nerang National Park.

We were inspired to help by attending a Greater Glider information seminar held in Nerang earlier this year learning about how Habitat loss is a key factor in their decline, through Land clearing and Bushfires suitable Greater Glider Habitat decreased significantly.

The habitat replacements were installed with considerations of height and entrance orientation in what has been known to be suitable for GG’s

These boxes will be monitored and occupancy recorded, allowing future projects to improve suitable habitat replacement systems and strategies.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered and helped assist us, and Jess who organised the entire project, we are looking forward to visiting again soon.

If you are a Gold Coast local, I strongly encourage you to get active in your community and environment, a great place to start would be following to keep your finger on the pulse of up and coming information seminars, and what workshops you can get involved in.

Time spent in the forest is never time wasted ✌️

WE ARE WHO WE ARE

I’m excited for the what the future holds, with a focus on mastery over victory, there is nothing to achieve besides self improvement, the goals we set and reach are nothing more then milestones in what I hope is a life of happiness, learning and positivity. Peace and love people ✌️ ❤️

TARGETED HOLLOW CREATION
We have been lucky enough to be part of a project at a small farm in Burbank, documenting and creating arboreal habitats in the properties mature native trees. This is one of my favourites, carefully constructed by , we discussed and identified the best branch unions to target, this is a swollen and pronounced collar with deadwood slowly being compartmentalised, he removed the protruding stub beyond the callus, then used the to carve the internal dead and decaying timber leaving live tissue to continue doing its job and this will eventually seal over unless occupied by one of the many hollow relying bird, mammal or reptile species in the area. We are getting some amazing data from these first few projects, and looking forward to gaining conclusive results that will help us to delivering the hollowhog hollows in a broad range of environments with certainty of their impacts on tree health and condition.

I’ve registered because I can’t think of a better excuse to spend 20 minutes getting some vitamin D and supporting birdlife Australia by watching the birds in my own backyard.

How many birds will you spot? 🔎🐦🦅🦜 Take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count during 18-24 October (National Bird Week) and make every bird count!

It's easy to take part. Just spend 20 minutes in your favourite outdoor space and tell us about the birds you see during that time.

To find out more or register as a bird counter today - https://aussiebirdcount.org.au

There are lots of great prizes to be won! Your help will assist BirdLife Australia to better understand local birds and conserve their populations.

Happy bird counting!

SCAR TREE AGE TESTING! Such an awesome experience, We recently got the opportunity to assist with age testing on a remnant Eucalyptus racemosa (Scribbly gum) The tree is located in a site bound for development, cultural heritage experts had flagged the tree as a potential Scar Tree, scar trees are trees that have been used by Aboriginal Australians to create canoes, shields, shelter, and tools, they are part of not only the language groups history in which they are found, but all Australian history! This big girl, full of character came in at 130 years old, confirming that indeed the tree is with in the required age bracket to be considered a Scar tree!

More details to come on the method used to determine its age, we will update our website with a blog post

The diversity of species of organisms that rely on trees for life I truly find fascinating.

We’re not the only ones that have a use for trees, trees are the habitat and life source for so many living.

A dead tree might find itself being called useless and unappealing by a land owner, actually feeds, houses and supports a vast network of creatures, microbes and fungi that we don’t even know are there.

The more I learn, the more I realise I don’t know, I love that I fell down the rabbit hole of arboriculture, seeing things that amaze me while others simply walk by.

Shout out the from for hooking me up with a RRP, had a little jam in the back yard yesterday and today, really enjoyed it, it seems like such a great system to teach SRS to .99 and smooth and responsive. Thanks again mate, enjoy your week in the islands ✌🏼
