Red gum firewood is back in stock at Macedon Nursery & Garden Supplies. If you know firewood, you know red gum burns hotter and longer than most alternatives, which makes it worth seeking out for a Macedon Ranges winter.

This load has come in from up north and there's plenty of it. Selling at $570 a tonne, which fills roughly twice what fits in the back of a ute, so it represents solid value if you're stocking up for the season.

Advanced trees are worth the investment at any time of year, but winter is actually a strong planting window in the Macedon Ranges. Deciduous trees are dormant, transplant stress is minimal, and the cooler soil temperatures encourage root establishment before spring growth begins. A tree planted now will be well ahead of one planted in September.

Camellias are one of the standout plants for a Macedon Ranges winter garden. While most of the garden is dormant, a well-placed Camellia japonica like this is in full flower through June and July, unbothered by the cold and requiring very little to perform well.

They prefer a sheltered position with dappled light, which suits the treed blocks and established gardens common across the region. Planted now, they'll be flowering within weeks and establishing through winter ready for a strong season next year.

Andrew has joined the team at Macedon Nursery & Garden Supplies, and he comes with a background that's hard to come by in a nursery setting.

A former gardening editor with The Age and 3AW, Andrew spent years communicating horticulture to broad audiences before putting that knowledge to work in the field, running his own landscaping business and then spending the past decade hands-on with a local landscape company.

Seed potato season is here and Macedon Nursery & Garden Supplies is fully stocked. Varieties currently available include Nicola, Rodeo and Imperial Blue, alongside onion sets and shallots.

Potatoes are one of the more forgiving crops for a Macedon Ranges winter garden. They'll grow well in open ground, in a pot, or in a grow bag if you're working with a smaller space or want to keep things mobile. The grow bags in particular allow for easy harvesting without digging up the bed.

Nicola is a reliable all-rounder with a waxy texture suited to roasting and salads. Rodeo is a good general purpose variety, and Imperial Blue brings a point of difference with its distinctive blue-purple skin and earthy flavour.

Good to see the beer garden at @‌macedonvillagehotel taking shape. The Macedon Nursery & Garden Supplies team has been out planting up the raised timber beds with a mix of nandina, salvia, lomandra and low shrubs that will fill in well through the seasons.

The Bauble by Kelly Metal, photographed among the nursery stock at Macedon Nursery & Garden Supplies. The open-form sphere is designed with a central planting opening, so the sculpture and whatever grows through it become a single composition.

At 675mm wide and 29kg, it sits securely without anchoring and works as a standalone feature or as part of a broader planting scheme. The corten steel darkens and stabilises over time, as visible here on the nursery floor.
