Thank you to everyone who came to last week's Australian Passivhaus Association Pecha Kucha night in Newtown.

I spoke about LIVED, a Marvel Homes initiative. We want to learn how the house performs once the homeowner moves in. How does it handle heatwaves and smoke? What are the rooms like at 3 a.m. with CO2 building up? We want to start with two homes so we can compare. I'll get into that next.

I am speaking at the Australian Passivhaus Association's Pecha Kucha Night in Newtown this evening.

My topic is LIVED. What happens after handover?

The idea is to keep looking at our certified Lilyfield home after the design, construction and certification work is finished. What are the indoor conditions once a family moves in? Are they comfortable? How much energy does the home use for heating and cooling?

I will introduce a proposed two-home methods pilot using our completed certified Passivhaus in Lilyfield and a defined code-compliant comparison home.

Two homes are only a starting point. The first job is to build a method that people can inspect, question and improve.

For our completed certified Passivhaus in Lilyfield, the paperwork records its design, construction and certification. It tells us much less about everyday life inside the finished home.

That is the question behind LIVED.

The proposed first pilot will look at indoor conditions, what the residents say about comfort, and the energy used for heating and cooling. We plan to use the same checks across one completed certified Passivhaus and one defined code-compliant comparison home.

I do not expect two homes to answer every question. I want the first pilot to show whether the method works and where it needs more work.

I will introduce it at the Australian Passivhaus Association's Pecha Kucha Night tomorrow evening.

Linden Thorley of Linden Thorley Architect will look at the developer case for Passivhaus.

Carlo Russo of CRUSH Architecture will show how one standard responds to three very different houses.

I will introduce LIVED. and the questions that come after handover.

Darryn Parkinson of Eclipse Passive House will speak about prefab and Passivhaus.

Darren Long of Sure Space will share what he learned from building his first Passivhaus.

The talks are different, which is the point. I am looking forward to the discussion after them.

Most homeowners will never see the airtightness layer once the house is finished, but they will notice if it has not been done properly.

Gaps around windows, doors or where the walls meet the slab can leave a home feeling draughty and make the heating and cooling work harder.

At our West Pymble Passive House project, we check these junctions before they are covered. The materials change from one area to the next, so the connections need to be worked out properly and then tested.

If you are building, ask your builder to show you how the air barrier connects around the home. It is much easier to get right during construction than after the walls are closed.
