A great few days of networking with many members from the elite survey companies from across Australia and NZ..
The National Surveying Congress provides great opportunity to learn from what the best in Australia are doing within their survey practice operations, which for a small business like T&G is an invaluable opportunity to learn how we can continue to improve for the benefit of our staff, clients and myself as Principal of the business.
Thank you to Surveyors Australia for putting on an excellent program of Business Speakers, and to all the fellow professionals that were prepared to openly share their experiences & knowledge.

I may be on a break from the office/work to rejuvenate the body & mind, but that doesn't mean the chance to further educate oneself stops. Now onto book No.2.

Surveying is one of the oldest professions on the Planet.

With advances in measurement technology, the need for surveyors has not diminished but has actually expanded, but the public's perception & understanding of our skills has diminished.

American Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, & Thomas Jefferson were all recognised for their skills developed from working as Surveyors, and Theodore Roosevelt worked in geological mapping a related professional skill.

I am not sure the modern Surveyor would be able to establish a personal profile that could be rewarded with the presidency. The technical skills that we as Licensed Surveyors hold that help build confidence in property tenure, financial security and a stabilised economy remain the same as those that benefitted in the days of Washington, Lincoln & Jefferson. Both Australia & America have been built on the foundation skills laid down by the Surveying industry.

The technology may have changed, but the technical skills of understanding which mix of the new technologies available should be used for your project remains the domain of the Surveyor in balancing efficiency, accuracy, precision and preparation of useable datasets to be utilised by other consulatants in your project.

The Surveyors role continues to be the foundation of all successful development projects.

Please contact our office if we can help create the accurate foundations and stability for your project in the Yarra Ranges and Murrindindi Regions of Victoria.

I have been attending FIG2026 in Cape Town the last few days.

Surveying and Housing are facing the same issues internationally as we are dealing with in Australia.

Interesting to hear about some of the different approaches being undertaken, and how AI may be able to supplement what we can do as Surveyors, particularly as we take on the challenges of significantly larger datasets produced by survey scanning and drone equipment. Interpretation and assessment of accuracy and conversion to an output format that is of an ease of use by our clients, still requires professional judgement and human involvement and oversight.

Tomorrow Unlocked.

What we excel at today, won't necessarily meet our clints needs for tomorrow.

Being a small firm, we can't be experts or invest in every piece of new gagetry & software that is developed, but understanding what technology is available ensures our Consultancy to our clients can continue to benefit their projects.

Matt, Ross and myself are on our way to Brisbane today, and excited to learn about all the new offerings from Leica and to learn how to get improved efficiency and results from our current suite of equipment and software. An intense program of development, training & networking over the next few days, learning from shared experiences from other Leica users. Surveying is a collaborative industry, which helps make it a great career choice.

Its a big week of training & development planned this week at Thomas & George P/L .

Yesterday we had Matthew & Mitch From VUAS run us through Drone Flight training & mission planning, with Ross to have a follow up session on the drone flight office processing.
The VUAS team provided some very inciteful tips on how to improve the efficiency and programming of our drone flight missions, and the safety considerations.

Training programs are not just to help develop the young team members to be better field surveyors, but also teach us experienced surveyors some new tricks, which we can add to the tool bag in satisfying our clients deliverables as appropriate.

Surveying requires constant ongoing investment in training and development, which is a part of our costs that clients don't get to see dorectly, when our team arrives on site and their project proceeds smoothly and methodically. Management, training and programming requires development & doesn't happen overnight.

Thank you also to Leo from Killara Estate, who allowed us access to their property to use a as a safe drone training venue.

Ross was out surveying today enjoying this mid Autumn weather, but wishing this 'survey assistant' had stayed home for the day.

Stay safe, they are still out & about.
