We've been noticing more bold, dark timber choices coming through in our new builds lately and we're here for it.

In our recent North St project, the walnut joinery pairs beautifully with crisp white, stone benchtops and a few well-placed pops of colour.

What do you think of the darker timber choice?

A lot of what makes a good builder good happens behind the scenes.

Here are seven things good builders do that clients may never hear about:

🔎 Spot problems before they reach site
Reviewing plans, questioning details and identifying potential issues early, when they’re easier and cheaper to resolve.

🕘 Keep trades one step ahead
Making sure the right people, materials and information are lined up at the right time so the job keeps moving.

📐 Check the details clients may never notice
Levels, finishes, junctions, alignment and all the small things that determine how well a home ultimately comes together.

🔄 Find a better solution when something doesn’t work on site
Not every detail works in the real world exactly as it appeared on paper. A good builder knows how to resolve it without compromising the result.

📆 Rework the construction sequence when things change
Weather, lead times and unexpected issues happen. Good builders adjust the plan and keep the project moving wherever possible.

🗑️ Reject materials that aren’t up to standard
Damaged, incorrect or poor-quality materials don’t make it into the build just because they’ve already arrived on site.

🤔 Make hundreds of small decisions along the way
Solving issues, coordinating people and making judgement calls without every minor decision needing to land on the client’s desk.

When all of this is happening as it should, you probably won’t hear about most of it.

You’ll just see it in the finished home.

Building a home is one of the biggest investments you'll make, so a few smart decisions early can save you a lot of money later.

Matt shares three practical ways to avoid unnecessary costs during your build:

• Involve your builder early so your design and budget can work together from the start.
• Choose cladding materials that suit your budget, maintenance expectations and long-term goals.
• Work with trusted trades. Quality workmanship is an investment, and fixing poor work almost always costs more than getting it right the first time.

A little planning upfront can make a big difference to your budget, timeline and the quality of your finished home.

We spend months focused on plans, details, craftsmanship and getting every finish just right.

Then one day, the boxes arrive. The dog finds its favourite sunny spot. Shoes end up by the door. Toys appear on the kitchen bench. Weekends become beach walks and slow mornings at home.

That's the moment the project stops being ours and starts becoming theirs.

There's something incredibly rewarding about seeing a house become part of a family's everyday life.

Three months in and already part of the crew 👌

Meet Ewan, our third-year apprentice carpenter.

He loves the variety that comes with carpentry and enjoys getting stuck into framing, trusses and fit-outs.

Glad to have you on the team Conkie
