Removal of a Poplar tree showing evidence of active termite infestation.

During our inspection, we found termites attacking the centre of the tree. Combined with the tree's declining condition, the internal damage raised concerns about its structural integrity and long-term safety.

While termites play an important role in breaking down dead timber in the natural environment, their presence inside a living tree can sometimes indicate significant internal deterioration.

Every tree is different, which is why a thorough assessment is essential before deciding on the most appropriate course of action.

🍂 What is Frass? 🐛🌳

These photos show frass — a protective covering created by certain species of wood-boring insects.

Frass serves two important purposes: • It helps camouflage the borer from predators. • It provides a protective shelter while the insect develops.

It's made from chewed wood and bark, mixed with a binding material such as webbing or saliva produced by the borer.

The presence of frass is a sign that a borer is active and feeding within the tree. Left untreated, this can weaken the host plant over time.

The good news is that if the problem is identified early, appropriate tree care and management can often prevent more serious damage.

Early detection is always the best defense.

🌿 A Closer Look at Nature 🌿

These four photos show the impact that some climbing vines can have on young trees.

As the vine wraps tightly around the trunk, it can restrict the tree's natural growth and development. Over time, the trunk continues to expand, gradually growing around the constricting vine.

It's fascinating to see the tree continuing to grow and adapt despite the restriction. Nature is remarkably resilient, but these kinds of constrictions can place additional stress on a tree as it matures.

🌳 Blue Mountains 🌳

Here's another example of fungal canker, this time affecting a different species of tree.

The effect is much the same. It's a slow battle between the fungal canker and the tree's natural ability to compartmentalise the damage and repair itself. In many cases, this process can continue for years.

One observation I've made over many years as an arborist is that fungal cankers often seem to be more prevalent on older trees or trees that are already under stress. While this is my own field observation rather than established scientific fact, it does make you wonder whether healthier trees are better equipped to defend themselves.

Following the strong winds the previous evening, this tree suffered a major split, leaving it structurally unstable.

These photos show the extent of the damage and why the tree could no longer be safely retained.

Once a tree has split in this way, its structural integrity can be severely compromised. In this case, the damage presented an immediate risk, and removal under the emergency provisions was the safest course of action.

While we always look for ways to preserve trees where possible, safety must come first when a tree has been significantly weakened.

🌳 Blaxland 🌳

We removed a tree to make way for a new landscaping project and the establishment of a native garden.

While our focus is always on preserving trees where appropriate, there are times when removal is the best option to allow a property to evolve and create space for new planting.

In this case, the homeowner is replacing the tree with a native garden that will provide habitat, biodiversity, and a landscape better suited to the space.

Every garden has its own story, and sometimes one tree makes way for many new plants to thrive.
