This is my story.
Four weeks ago I woke up and couldn’t see properly. I’m sharing this in case it helps someone like me.
I became a builder at 17. Six years later I started my own business. On the tools, in the sun, with my mates every day. Life was easy.
Then the business grew, and so did the hours. Nights and weekends in the office doing estimates, books, sales and admin.
Somewhere along the way I stopped enjoying it. Cash flow, HR issues, work that never ended. I’ve burnt out a couple of times since 2017, but this time was different.
My eyes went blurry. I couldn’t look at light. Severe anxiety and depression. My confidence was shot. For two weeks I barely left the couch, feeling like s**t and not knowing why.
After a few trips in and out of hospital they found a minor brain hemorrhage which was an early warning sign. The problem was how I’d been living. 12 to 20 hours a day on screens. Obsessed with building AI, talking to my computer naked or in bed at 1am to fix whatever broke. Running multiple businesses. An hour of daylight most weekdays. Hardly seeing my mates. Bottled up and alone, feeding a machine I’d built that was slowly taking from me.
I’ve never felt so mentally and emotionally exhausted in my life and that was self inflicted.
Here I am now only at the start of feeling like me again. But it was the wake-up call I needed to pull my head out of my ass.
I lost one of my best mates to su***de, and this year I’ve seen too many people lose someone to depression. Until you’re in it, you don’t know how hard it is to control your own mind.
So whoever you are, Builder, sparky, plumber, business owner. It’s okay to put your hand up. It’s okay to say you’re not okay. I had to.
Huge love to my partner, and to my team at Zanetto Builders and Future Builder for carrying the load while I couldn’t 🫶 like Arnie once said “I’ll be back”
Tag a mate you love below. Then give them a bell.
Probably the one you haven’t heard from in a while, or who keeps saying no to catch ups. That was me. It was my early sign I wasn’t okay.
